Two people were killed and a third was injured when a gunman opened fire inside a church near Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday, police said.
A suspect in the evening shooting at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills is in custody, police said.
"From what we've gathered from the circumstances of this evening, a lone suspect entered a small group church meeting and began shooting," Vestavia Hills police Capt. Shane Ware said.
The suspect's identity was not immediately released.
The third person who was injured was being treated at a hospital, he said.
A motive in the shooting was not disclosed.
The police department responded at 6:22 p. m. to an active shooter call. Multiple law enforcement agencies and fire departments were at the scene, police said.
“You don’t think it’s going to happen here, and it’s scary,” Hudlow said.
The church rector, the Rev. John Burruss, in a video said that he was “deeply moved” by expressions of support and love from all over the country, and he thanked clergy and first responders.
Burruss, who is in Athens, Greece on a church pilgrimage, said he was working to get back to Alabama Thursday. He appeared to hold back tears at times and asked for prayers.
“That is what we do as people of faith: We come together in the midst of life and death,” he said.
Vestavia Hills is a city of around 39,000 southeast of Birmingham.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said she was praying for the victims and community.
“We want to offer our prayers for the victim’s family, the injured and the entire church community,” Ivey said. “I am glad to hear the shooter is in custody. This should never happen — in a church, in a store, in the city or anywhere.
Why are schools and churches a usual target for insane shooters?
I would assume because these are supposed to be areas seen as safe to the public because you would have to be a heartless psycho to kill kids or in the house of God to kill people who are worshipping.
It doesn't fit the picture where one would expect a shooting to take place like a house, the street, somewhere in a crime filled city, etc. However it is because of that reason that those individuals are easier to be considered targets that will either be unable to fight back or stop the attacker quickly if at all.
Schools and churches are places with a high concentration of people who are less likely to be armed and prepared to defend themselves. Schools and churches are places people tend to let their guard down because they believe they are safe there. The sad fact is there are sick people in the world who will take advantage of people’s feelings of security and exploit it for their own purposes, be it financial gain, violence, notoriety, or whatever else it may be.
I think they are sites where people have experienced trauma. Being bullied as a kid at school, or being controlled by their parents' religion, so they take out their hate on the innocent people in those locations because they blame them for their suffering. Just my guess though. Very sad :(
Because they are gun-free zones! If one is determined to kill as many innocents as possible, where are you gonna go… a place where people are armed, or a place where it’s illegal to Cary a firearm? Hey, do you remember that huge mass shooting at that NRA conference? No? That’s because everyone there is well armed, so no mass shooter’s have ever even tried it!
Churches would of necessity be at minimum religiously motivated, schools because the government scores way too much political capital on shootings to let things like protecting children’s lives get in the way. Sacrificing a few pawns for their politics is an acceptable loss to the evil monsters we have in government refusing to harden targets they legislatively soften.

Shooters look for this places because they are weak, people in a peaceful indefense state will probably not respond to the attack as they should, or cannot really do anything against the shooter in that situation. I don't think a shooter will go to a bar full of men, a slaughterhouse, a bikers convention, or somewhere like that.
They are seen as soft targets especially schools that have 'Gun Free Zone' signs plastered all over them. when I taught and tutored in the US I had a CCW and carried every day though if the school/college had any problems with me doing so they never said anything, but then I made sure to never have my firearm on display.
That's as it may be, but I would have been alive, along with students I'd have been responsible for, I can get another job I cannot get another life or give life back to my students, If the school/college had a problem with my CCW I would have left that school/college as to me that would mean they had no regard for the safety of their students and were too focused on one political dogma,

Everyone knows that nobody has any firearms in a school except maybe a resource officer which are not in most schools. Maybe nobody thinks people will be packing when they go to church too.

Years ago, Obama made comments about a group he referred to as bitterly clinging to their guns and Bibles. It was basically a cheap shot against Christian gun owners, the most successful opposition to his attempt to bring about the New World order.
Because government buildings has better security? And work places usually only have one candidate for murder so there is no mass shooting in those. While schools and churches are places that put pressure on people and are very homogeneous, ie it's easy to put a blame on the whole thing.
they are soft targets. Their intended victims are unlikely to be armed (especially in schools). Plus these shootings are an outward rage of inner rage and turmoil these shooters feel. So for "dramatic effect" (for lack of a better term), they pick these sacred targets.

Because they are gun-free zones. Obviously someone who is wanting to shoot up a place is going to try and pick a location where they're at least likely to get shot back at.
Because that's where the gun free zones are and that's where they can inflict the most damage. Liberals for some reason think a "gun free zone" sign deters murderers and criminals.
Large congregation and no one carrying a gun to fire back, usually a church or school is an easy slaughter for them. I would love to see them try to start shooting in a police station and see how long they last or a military base
Likely because they are institutions where people are socialized early in life, thus they get associated with potential painful memories and emotions that contribute to the persons psychopathology that contribute to them making some really unfortunate decisions.
