Toyota builds the Highlander, Sequoia, Sienna, RAV4, Camry, Avalon, Tacoma, Tundra, and Corolla, as well as additional parts factories for other models in the USA. Nissan builds most of its Altimas Maximas in the US, as well as all of their Titan, Frontier, XTerra, and Armadas here in the US, and all of them are in red or red-leaning states. Honda also has a huge manufacturing presence in Alabama. They're relatively cheap, easy to find, have a good reputation, support the local economy, and aside from just being too common to be "special," there's really not a good reason to arbitrarily avoid them.
The 'American' car manufacturers are largely seen as American in name only because they've outsourced so much of their manufacturing to other countries. Even the BMW SUVs are more "American" than most Ford's and Chevys. Most American brands also do not have a good reputation for longevity or reliability, most people who drive Japanese or European sports cars basically abandon the American ones, so people who want their cars to actually last and/or be fun to drive (generally things Republican voters and people in general do want in their cars), it largely means not buying American outside the Tesla cult, because most American brand cars are built on the idea that you'll be trading it in within 4 years anyway.

Where do people keep coming up with this stuff?
According to the data, Republicans are much more likely to drive American made cars & trucks, while Democrats are much more likely to drive imports (European & Japanese).
While there are some similarities, and outliers (Honda Civics are popular among both, and Mercedes is popular among affluent Republicans), when you start getting into the differences, red states tend to have more rugged, American V8 trucks, while blue states tend to have more economical Japanese imports.

Republicans probably have a strong showing among people who drive cars period given democrats totally dominate the people who don't drive at all.
Most likely a because of the effects of urbanization on the human mind. The higher the population density the more likely the people therein will vote democrat. Larger numbers of people around you tend to make you support more rules and controls.
Fewer people around you tends to make you favor more freedom. Why wouldn't they? Seriously, why would you think otherwise?
If you go back when Japanese cars started becoming popular, it was Democrats who hated them and would destroy other people's cars because they were Japanese.I actually once was behind a Toyota pickup truck with all kinds of snarky right wing political bumper stickers on it. There was, ironically, also a “Buy American🇺🇸“ bumper sticker, again…. on a Toyota, lmao.
Good question. You would think that they would drive American made vehicles like I do to support the American economy,.
Because we believe in competition and capitalism, duh.
It's perhaps because in both cases the person in question has poor judgement skills?
Pfft. Their parts were probably manufactured in China too.
because the people that drive "Japanese Cars" vote Democrat, we need to keep Japanese car drivers "fair and balanced"
more like BMW or other high-priced cars the long time Republican's not the new ones
Because they aren't stupid enough to buy anything else because Japenese cars are the most reliable cars you can buy
I'm a republican and I only drive American 🚗
Because the Japanese are very conservative.
We are republican and only drive American cars.
Where's your data to support this theory?
Prius owners vote repub?
Toyotas are built in America.
