Can we stop judging people for their wealth?

Both in abundance, and lack of thereof? I feel it's dehumanizing when people only look at what a person owns instead of the person itself.

People - such as my sister and others - always comment about my cars, or the house I live in, the watch I wear, or the travels I make. They say I'm not a worker but a capitalist. I wear a worker's uniform almost every day and I put all my energies in my duty as a public official, and such accusations have really started to bring me down. I apologize for the rant, someone found it appropriate to PM me reiterating those points, "going by my questions".

I think it comes down to one of two things, often. One is envy, and it’s a really ugly emotion (human failing) and it speaks more of the person who’s envious than the person they are envious of. The other is when someone doesn’t like another person (which is maybe justified or not), they tend to attack on the most obvious levels - age, gender, sexuality, occupation, status, wealth… Maybe they don’t want to say the reasons they actually don’t like the person; or maybe they’re too dumb to sit and figure that out, and then articulate it, so they just attack on a surface level. If you’re the receiver of that, and you don’t care about or respect the person, then it’s pretty easy to just shrug it off, as you know it’s a low tactic and just illustrates another reason why you also don’t like or respect them.


Jealousy is so base. It’s the unevolved who can’t get past this. Some say they’re your friend or family member or colleague and that of course they are above that, but it’s often not true; they’re wallowing in it, and it comes out as either direct criticism, or snippy, passive-aggressive, digs. They just can’t handle either your success, or what they perceive to be the injustice of your gains.


I guess there’s a third type of person who doesn’t like injustice, and they get incensed when they see examples of it. Wealthy people tend to believe that they deserve their wealth, whether they earned it through hard work, taking risks, ambition, or for being a good, honourable, person. People don’t often admit, “Wow, I am so lucky for what I have.” Then you’ve got the new money people vs the old money. New money think they are self-made, and thus the most deserving. But they tend to flaunt it, waste it, spend it fast. Sometimes they have to build it up all over again, with another venture. Old money was often raised to have more decorum about it, and may be more sophisticated in their appreciation of the finer things in life. Good taste can be developed, nurtured. For them it’s a lifestyle that’s ingrained into their upbringing. Sometimes they hold themselves morally above others. Sometimes that’s true; sometimes it’s not.


In the end what matters is not how much money they have, but how noble their character. That is the ultimate metric by which people should be judged. If someone ignores this, and goes for the low-hanging fruit, then their judgments mean very little.

Yeah. I don't. I've seen both sides. I went to a swimming pool with a group of wealthy bullies for a while (girls). Kinda had to because I was in a foreign country. They would bully me too if I told them to stop their non-stop nonsense about people.

I also met people who treated a person like a disease when they found out he/she is wealthy. It happened in university.

If we can get grocery store clerks to stop judging that people shouldn't have food because they don't have enough money, or doctors judging people shouldn't recieve health care because they dont have enough money, or police judging that a suspect isn't going to have a very good lawyer anyway because they dont have enough money, absolutely. Until then it will always be apparent that the sole reason there are "haves" and "have nots" is because of how much some people "have."

My only opinion is that rich people don't have the right to comment on class warfare. If you're not poor, you don't know the struggle. So don't try to speak for me. It's insulting.
But as long as everyone leaves everyone else alone and respects everybody, then I will respect them as well.

Too many people seem to love having the opportunity to hate people wth wealth, as if there is something wrong with being successful. And it is very consistent with the class envy/class warfare that the left advances.

I too wish I can openly discuss … but people do judge. So I am careful how/who I share with.
it’s harder when it comes to families. I hope she understands you didn’t grow up with abundance and that you don’t sit around.

And i agree with you, we should judge people for their financial condition. Except for that group i mentioned first.

It's a complicated world and humans try hard to simplify it. A social shortcut says that a rich kids will be spoilt, entitled and a princess. A poor kid will be unsophisticated, ignorant and frankly is not trying.

But then for any one person, that may or may not be true.
