They say horrible, hurtful things about us -- that we're backwards, hicks, backwoods creeps, racists, white supremacists, rednecks, NASCAR fans. The list goes on and on. Personally, I believe that these stereotypes come from the federal government, whose best interest is in convincing everyone that we lost the Civil War, and that racism stems from us. But no one looks at facts.

• Fact 1: The U. S. Never declared war on the south.
• Fact 2: The conflicts ended when we shot Abe Lincoln and Andrew Johnson from North Carolina took over.
• Fact 3: Congress tried to outlaw black codes in the South and Johnson vetoed every one. Fact

• Fact 5: We had slaves until the 1960s, and the Feds did a horrible job of freeing slaves.
• Fact 6: We don't need a rebel flag because we stole yours.

Let's do a fact check on the "facts" in this post:
1 - War can only be declared on another country. Since teh USA (North) never recognized the CSA (South), it couldn't declare war
2 - The South surrendered on April 12, 1865 ... Lincoln was assassinated 2 days later
3 - Johnson was the first President impeached for not doing his job
4 - The South suffered economically after the war and recovered to pre-war levels due to Reconstruction efforts funded by the North
5 - Slavery in the South was abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863; the South did treat blacks as lower-class citizens (though not slaves) until the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s
6 - Yes, that is a flag
7 - Yes, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Raleigh-Durham is ranked best high school in the country by the Niche web site; however, that school is not in the top-10 high schools in the country in the historically accepted rankings by US News & World Report

I know for a fact that Jefferson Davis felt that slaves were a blessing from God. I also know that there were slaveowners who worked right alongside their slaves. And that white mothers gave their babies to slaves to nurse them. Would a racist ask a black servant to nurse her child? Where do you think these negative stereotypes really come from? They come from the fact that the Union did a piss poor job of freeing anybody. The South won, and it had nothing to do with race. It had to do with our economy. 1. The confederacy was angry at the North for not returning escaped slaves. The North was supposed to return slaves that had escaped the South, but kept refusing.

2. The confederacy was insistent that states joining the Union be slave owning.

3. The states of the confederacy in their declarations of independence list slavery specifically as the cause for ceding.

4. We have the "cornerstone" speech, where your vice president declares that the very foundation of your civilization is the "truth" that "Blacks" are inferior to "Whites".

There is so much more in newspaper articles, debates in Congress, documentation from the era that is readily accessible.

But you avoid all of that to make some weird argument. You don't seem to know if you view "Blacks" as inferior or not. You don't seem to know if slavery is good or not. But maybe with medication and counseling, you can get to a place where you can form some sort of stable opinion on these things.

I live in Texas and have lived in NC but also in California and England.
North Carolina has SOME fine schools like any other state. It also has 4 very fine universities. You can't take one example of anything from a large area like that and draw a conclusion about all the other samples.
