Merit deduction on paystub?

We live in alberta Canada and I was recently going through my partners paystubs to help him calculate some things and I noticed a section under deductions that says “merit” it took a good chunk of his pay check and all I’m seeing online is that merit is actually a bonus pay for employees with good performance I’m super new to all of this and can’t seem to find anything that says this should actually be a deduction but rather a payment to him anybody ever heard of this?

Merit could be money to family members or sick friends, donations to the church or charity of his choice, investments or secret debts he owes family he does not want you to know, it might also be a secret house he is buying for his future wife and he wants to hide that from you until he knows he is sure, or maybe he wants to surprise you and merit could also be a code word for yacht or restaurant business or hair styling business etc…
