I think it's a term that will eventually have little meaning.

I mean right now it basically tends to mean "not conforming to what people are expecting either gender to be." But I think there has always been plenty of that without having to explicitly dissociate from gender.

I have a couple friends who are non-binary male. They don't act in ways especially distinct from how many men have behaved through history, but in many ways that differ from what we are explicitly look for when we say "man" or "woman".

So personally, I don't think it's a "gender" of its own. I think people try too hard to take every personality trait that deviates from the expectation and call it a "new gender". If the goal is for the genders to have more flexibility, I feel like having more narrowly-defined genders, or dumping genders if you don't conform, is essentially making genders more rigidly defined.

Nevertheless, I think it can at least be a useful tool during this period of exploration.

I can't even pretend to understand all these genders out there. I've seen arguments for both sides for transgender people, but I honestly don't mind. I hardly know what non-binary is except that they identify as not a woman and not a man which is what I don't get? Or they switch between both depending on what they feel like? But then some people are he/they or she/they which is just confusing. What I, not disagree with but find weird, are the people who use zhey zhem or whatever pronouns, basically anything that's not he/she/they. Plus, sometimes people really try to undermine biology which I find stupid, there's that video of the guy who said that in a hundred years when people dig you up, you'll either be a man or a woman, which dismisses transgender people, but I get. So no, I don't understand all of this, but I think he/she/they are genders? I don't even know tbh but I know that some people think that this gender issue is/should be the biggest problem in the world when the majority of people have more things to think about

No: genders are two, one that has XX chromosomes and second that has XY chromosomes.

As gender is determined by chromosomes, in order non binary to be a third gender it would have to have other set of chromosomes. XZ, XC or anything else. But it doesn't.

I except that genetically and biologically intersex people exist. So do Swyer Syndrome and de la Chapelle Syndrome. Beyond that? People can call themselves whatever they want, but I will not be bullied into calling some burly dude "she" or someone who is clearly a lady "he."

Here's an idea: even if you have that "extra chromosome", you're still binary. It's just a longer number and no, it's not a gender.
