Freedom of speech or expression isn't the end all be all of a better freedom or democracy. It translates more into where the "overton window" is. The overton window is a powerful tool to understand and connect to the population. Still doesn't make a better country.

As an example you can call someone is a "jerk off" to tell someone off, the reasonable peers around you can make a sound judgment. That's within the overton window. Now if you physically jack yourself off to tell someone off, the reasonable peers around can't make a sound judgment and universally call you a lunatic. That would be outside the overton window.

I'm using a hyperbolic example to make it easier to understand. In reality it's just changing of times. With me growing up faggot was a fun word to say now it's embarrassing. As they say times are a changin.

I can also say freedom of speech is exploted and more often then its intended usage and freedom is to openly lie and take away others freedom. It's coded language that is within the overton window verbally but in function and reality is completely outrageous.

@Snakeyes7 You can be liberal in world view and liberal in economy. In first case Democrats are liberal, in second one Republicans are liberal and I never heard anyone calling Republicans "liberals". Someone who is liberal both in world-view and economy is either "classical liberal" or "libertarian"
