Why is the American gen Z population so centrist and moderate politically?

Actually no, they're not. Gen z is the most polarized generation that has ever existed. They are either far-left, or far-right. I think of course the internet is part to blame for this effect.

I myself identify as a centrist. I do not support either party due to disagreement with some of their values, but most importantly their attitudes towards each other. With Gen z, you see a lot of "they/them" and "she/her" stuff on social media, but then there's probably an equal amount of them on 4chan saying the n word with a hard er on a daily basis. Buffalo mass shooting was an example why they are not all super "woke".

Also, this generation is the most outspoken politically, which maybe gives the illusion that they are the most involved, but that title still belongs to elderly people who vote on the regular. What they are good at though is calling each other names and blocking whoever they disagree with/trying to cancel them, and that's true for Republicans and Democrats.

They didn't grow up in the time of the cold war. For 50 years. Our nation was defined, our society was defined by the righteousness of Capitalism and the disdain for the evils of Communism. Neither is perfect. But the Soviet Union illustrated what can, and typically does go wrong under Communism. It was a totalitarian regime that was doomed to failure. The United States on the other hand, 2008 gave us another example of the unbridled greed of Capitalism, and what can happen when man's greed isn't held in check.

As a result of this I think Gen Z gets a very different view than our past generations have.

Because they got an education early in life: That adults are full of shit and self-serving.
Being brought-up in that, they can more easily detect bullshit from the far ends of the left and right.
What they also see is that no one is looking out for them and that older generations failed them...
The GOP failed them by creating a world that is truly fucked-up.
The DEMs failed them because they are dangerously incompetent at getting elected and connecting with common people.

As well as politics can become so hostile. Some abstain from it all together. Especially because there is a lot of fighting not between the two sides. But within the two sides as well.
