It's a little known fact that the South was working on a variety of extremely technologically advanced weapons systems, including the earliest model of the F-14 Tomcat. In this picture General Sherman (a senior Northern General) was startled when an F-14A did a fly by in excess of 400 knots, causing the Generals horse to buck and the General to be thrown to the ground. Realizing the vast superiority of this new weapons system General Sherman immediately began his "march to the sea" destroying everything in sight, including the "skunk works" where this aircraft was designed and produced. Unfortunately for the South, this Tomcat was a prototype and probably should have been kept under wraps rather than taunting Northern generals.

Yes, the South should have kept the Tomcat under wraps until it could have produced enough to stop Northern armies.

No, even with a few squadrons of Tomcats the North would still have won the Civil War.

I think a few "Bomb Cats" and some well placed MK82's could have turned the Northern armies back with little problem. I agree that the "Mud Hens" (F-15's) would be a better choice for killing Yankees but you fight with what you have.

So what would this high tech jet be shooting? Cannon balls? Exploding civil war era shells? That's more likely than them having precision guided missiles with high explosives. Anyhow it would be a flying platform for cannonballs. In that era they already had rifled cannons that could fire accurately at longer range than they actually had the ability to aim. That's right. The gun shooting ability was higher than the quality of their aiming equipment. So they ended up mostly just shooting line of sight. They'd have the same problem with any fancy flying aircraft... rendering it useless. Except for dropping bags of chickens, bricks, cannons at very low speed, I guess.

Lol no the battle of little round-TOP WAS THE BIGGEST loss the south took. If they would have won that battle they would have won the war when they lost, that was the end of their military power. It sent General Lee running and he was captured after.

It was Col Chamberlain who led his men down that hill with no more ammo with a sword and bayonets and fought there way down it scared the confederates so bad the way they came down charging they started to run they killed a lot on their way down and grabbed the souths weapons and killed them all, until the south raised the white flag. That battle is what sent Lee running.

If you haven't for some reason a lot of people don't look that battle up that battle was the most vital for both sides, a Tom cat would have done nothing.

The Tomcat was later renamed the "Bomb Cat" when the Navy started hanging iron bombs on it (due to retirement of A-6's and shortage and short legs of F-18's) You can bet a few Bomb Cats dropping strings of MK 82's would have stopped any Northern charge.

It probably seems that way from a spectators point of view. But if you're the one fighting it, even if you're winning, there are very few moments when you don't just want it to be over. This is why PTSD in US combat veterans is so common despite the fact we pretty much don't lose.

Well it's a good thing the south lost, imagine how much longer slavery would have gone on? I lived in Maine growing up and like the story of Joshua Chamberlain and how played an important role. Us Mainers were pivotal in operating the railroad for escaped slaves as well.

There is an interesting article written years ago called "The Economics of Slavery". Slavery would have ended within a few years even without the war.

Ultimately that is speculation since we can't know what would really happen. All I know, is that free labor is something sociopaths are going to be very reluctant to give up. Businesses still exploit slave labor to this day but it is largely outsourced overseas.

I firmly believe that if you let people get away with it, they would work children to the bone as slaves. Sometimes the government actually does need to step up and protect people from the vulture side of capitalism.

It was never free keeping slaves was an expensive business. With the advent of machinery like the cotton gin, and rudimentary harvesters, slavery would have had to end otherwise estates not making the investments in new technology would die.
