Are people over 20 who can't drive losers?

This is a common perception where I live. Oftentimes I give lifts to a secretary that's older than me but has not yet gotten her driving license yet. This earned some cattiness from other town hall employees.

To be honest, I do think that unless you live in a big city, not being able to drive is a huge limitation and forces you to depend on others for where public transportation and walking can't get you.

My wife herself got her driving license somewhat late (around age 25) because she could no longer rely on public transportation and me to drive her to different places every day.

I don't see them as losers. As an adult I realise some people are much more safer not driving as they should not even hold a licence. For example just today I was driving and this damn lady she is driving down the part of the road which was not a lane at all, next thing she cuts me off and almost hits me so I beep my horn at her. At the traffic lights she didn't even realise the light had turned green. Pulled up beside her to see what was going on just to see her looking constantly down at her phone.

I positively hate people that text and drive. My wife almost killed us once because she couldn't leave her phone alone.

Wouldn't use the word loser but they are definitely a little behind in life.

I think everyone should at least know how drive even if they live in the city or whatever it's still a important skill to have. Like as a parent I would never send my kids out into the real world unless they knew how to drive

I don't think so, if they never intended to buy a car and can get around via city transit then, it isn't something they need.

However, if they want to head out of the city on the weekends, they can't even rent a car, which presents a problem.

I suppose if they are okay with those limitations, then to each their own.

I do not drive at all and I’m 27 soon to be 28 and I can’t afford a car and don’t have a license I made a choice to travel by bicycle to work and I rather stay fit and healthy then be unhealthy and not be able to get anywhere with out one. Plus also it’s healthier on the planet

The word "loser" may be too strong, but such people obviously do not have any desire to be self-sufficient and they are not ashamed of being dependent on others like children.

I don't know if that's really a fair assessment. It certainly cannot be applied to everyone who doesn't drive. Most of the people that I know who don't drive have a medical limitation preventing them from obtaining a driver's license. My own brother is not permitted to drive due to epilepsy and the heavy medication that he takes for it.

I also live in a city with a fairly decent public transit system who choose this method, or taxis/Uber, over car ownership or even driving at all. I would not say these people have no desire to be self-sufficient. Perhaps in the suburban areas where there is an over reliance on personal cars, but not here. It can actually be an inconvenience and a financial burden to have a personal car in the downtown areas - parking is at a premium and very expensive, buying a single parking space in an apartment/condominium setting can add up to $30,000 to the final sale price. It's much worse in the winter after snowfalls, when all the plowed snow is piled up and can take up several spots at once until late spring.

@musicbrain5 I should have prefaced my response by saying that it doesn't apply if there is another obvious reason why the person does not drive. The two situations you describe are excellent examples.

I figured that you didn't not intend this to be a sweeping generalization - I know you are smarter than that! But I am offering this clarification to other people on here who I know will not think about these other circumstances, and just say that people are lazy if they don't drive.

@musicbrain5 I have represented people who are applying for Social Securty disability and some of them cannot drive because of their disability. My last client had narcolepsy with cataplexy.

My friend is 25 and doesn’t drive and she also has 2 kids. I wanna drive but nobody has taught me, I’m 24. I don’t see someone being a loser just because of that.. everyone has a time and shouldn’t be judged for that. My aunt didn’t drive till she was like 26 or 27. Is this some kind of race now? Wow.

They're not losers. They have their own reasons for not driving. Plus, it depends on where you live. There are places where public transportation really works.

On the other side you have people who drive but they're a danger to themselves and to others.

Nope, thankfully here it's not a big deal or at least I haven't had any bad experience with it or heard anything bad.
I also got my license with 22 but like here you don't need a car, still most people advice you to still get a license but a car is not necessary

They may not be losers but they are very stressful in that they need special attention or are an expense requiring a driver or front-door to front-door agency.

Nope. One would be a idiot to get a car were I live, and yet many people do. Most people aren't smart so it makes sense.

I would argue there's a lot of losers who think they can drive. You can probably argue that they are mentally or physically deficient in some way but we should maybe just call them automobillically challenged.
