As with most complex problems, there are multiple reasons, but I'd argue that the core of it is a breakdown in the valuing of the standing behaviors and attitudes that made for FUNCTIONAL homes.

And no, I don't mean "we let the gays marry" (that would logically have made things BETTER, if slightly) or "we let women into the workforce" (risky for unrelated reasons, and possibly tweaking things, but hardly an unmitigated evil); I mean "we stopped teaching our children that relationships are WORK, and that 'making love' refers to building lives together, not having sex".

Nowadays, young people grow into adulthood thinking that if your relationship isn't always easy, it wasn't meant to be- it's not hard to guess where that's going to lead.

Turns out the last two generations more or less sucked at raising children and protecting social institutions so parents in USA today are not equipped either emotionally nor just the knowledge of how to properly raise kids and maintain good relationships with their kids and spouse. Which in turn leads to what we have today. I mean seriously, how many American parents supports physical punishments for their children? That is 3rd world behavior and we literally have scientific studies on how bad it is for the development of the children which Americans evidently have NO idea about.
