While protecting that property he was attacked by not 1, but 3 people and forced to defend his life. He took no lives from anyone who wasn’t a threat. Millions of people in this country and around the world own arms, and most will never use them (outside of hunting, range shooting, etc). The gun was registered in Illinois and used in Wisconsin, meaning either 1. he brought it there, would would be illegal, since he came alone, or 2. he didn't come alone, or 3. it was somehow teleported there.

That was ignored, because illegally carrying a gun across state lines is pretty insignificant compared to shooting someone, but his possession of it under those circumstances very much taints the circumstances that shooting happened in.
