What do you think about the "15-minute city"?

The 15-minute city is an urban planning concept that tries to design urban and suburban areas in a way such that people can shop and eat and perhaps even work within a 15-minute travel distance from their homes. Does this sound like a good or bad idea to you?

This is a great concept -- in a classroom.

Speaking for what I've observed in the United States, I think there's two fundamental problems and a sort of "tried it".

The first problem is that the market always has and always will charge an uber premium for the ultra awesome office space. People can't afford to live in the buildings that are currently built and the developers don't want to take the risk. So, the first problem is a money problem.

The second problem is that, again at least in America, people want single family homes with a yard. You can't have a 15-minute city and that. Which leads to the sort of "tried it":

There are a lot of places where this concept exists. Again, most of America. A central strip mall surrounded by houses, schools, etc. The problem is the jobs piece. There's never enough jobs in that cluster to make it functional. So all those people drive/train/whatever to their job working for a corporation in a big building.

The 15-minute city would be great if we were still an agrarian or industrial society, but we're not.

I've never heard of this, but my city planners have been attempting to do this for years under different names.

I think it’s slightly already happening now most people want to be close to home and especially walking distance from home. There’s areas in my city that are like that now where are you can be in the apartment and downstairs is a grocery store. I think it’s just convenience and it’s helpful some

I just googled it and it looks nice but does this consist of tearing everything down and rebuilding from scratch? Because i feel like i already live in something similar. It doesn't even take 15 mins to get to the city

I think it is mostly for new areas.

Gee, that sounds like life in a small town.
I can be at the grocery store, hardware store, gas stations, restaurants, firehouse, or anyplace else in about 5 minutes.
People used to live above their businesses.
a really novel idea that has been around forever.

Great idea. I live in such a neighborhood. Still that are things I like to do that are more than a mile away, and I need a car to get there.
