To an extent, yes, it's true. But not necessarily in a bad way.

No one is completely transparent. No one shares every single bit of themselves. All of us (every one) wears some semblance of a mask, of a costume, of a disguise. The intent isn't usually bad. We hide flaws. We cover mistakes. We retreat from embarrassment.

My point is that in that way, we're all phony. We never get or give raw, unfiltered, uncut. Again, not in a scheming or deceiving way, we're just human.
