I'm not sure if he could if he would try but what I am much more certain of is that there are no others who would even try so on that basis alone it seems unreasonable to criticise Trump, at least on this subject.

Doubtful. The US already had the opportunity to moderate peace talks and both the US and UK actively prevented it from happening. There's very little leverage there anymore. Furthermore, Trump's strong performance in foreign policy during his tenure was heavily weighted by the fact foreign powers including Putin couldn't be sure when he was serious or bluffing when it came to military force, and had to assume he'd actually be crazy enough to use nukes- it's a strong position to have BEFORE shit hits the fan. It is worth mentioning however that his negotiation of peace talks around the world earned him three Nobel peace prize nominations, so it's fair to say that if anyone could do it, it'd be him.

If he was successful however, that peace would only last until the next weak leader comes around; it would be four years of buildup followed by round 3 of Russia vs Ukraine.
