Thats correct, despite all the contentiousness and far right anger Fifty-six percent of those surveyed say the term 'woke' actually means "to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices." That includes not only three-fourths of Democrats but also more than a third of Republicans. so yeah when you hear the word 'woke' tossed around... maybe they are complimenting you or something? ;)

To you far right types... well maybe its time you found a new term to chastise people you don't like anymore since this one has proven ineffective for your ends. im sure you'll find it. Get creative!

Lol- I kept going back and forth about it being:

aware of injustice and lies given

to it just being:

Uneducated (in both the educational system and just common sense or societal trends) people, who were making up “conspiracies” of their government and authorities in their townships/ states/ etc. and being some reason for their problems.

I mean, they may have the wrong pieces together, but the end result is somewhat, always true. Even if the government isn’t directly evil or “corrupt,”

They don’t care enough, or act when they ought to, nor swiftly when it’s most and/or actually needed,

so all in all,

I’m a fan of being “woke,” not the lies it can come with, but think we should fine-tune our methods, nationwide, and globally.

I have come to loathe, detest, and despise usage of the term “woke” in any context other than as the past tense of the verb wake. It’s come to mean anything certain groups of people don’t like. I rarely hear it irl, but it’s thrown around the internet as frequently as the word “the.”

It is one of those terms, like liberal and conservative, that suffers from semantic ambiguity in common usage. Liberal and conservative are used as derogatories by those who cherry-pick the absolute worst fringe examples of each. If we define "woke" as suggested above, there is no problem. But as even the article describing the poll shows, the respondents are defining the term differently, thus the different perception of the term:

Did you know that most American's know deep down that if they aren't seem woke enough they will become unemployable and possibly targeted with violence and intimidation? Some of that 56% aren't woke but are too afraid to admit it. being openly unwoke requires courage and strength these days. Being called woke to me is like someone calling me a lemming, Sheeple or a Spineless weasel.

"Alert to racial Prejudice, and social injustice"

We have a ton of that kind of 'alertness" in American society, as we have a huge segment of society that sees Racial Prejudice and Social Injustice' everywhere they look.

I too, don't know who or when the term was 'coined" and it is a little sad to have to look up some "word" that we don't know or never heard of, to understand why someone is using it.

The reality is, I could not care any less, about who uses it or what the hell it means.

I didn't really care what "woke" was, but I watched Jon Oliver's thing on DeSantis and he explained what "woke" meant. It's pretty hard to be a respected member of society and publicly say that you are opposed to "woke" when you actually know what it means. Having said that DeSantis and Trump probably will still publicly state that they are anti-woke so they can get the crazy racists to vote for them.

P. S. I am not saying either of them is racist, just that they act and talk like racists, and get the votes of racists by speaking and acting that way.

There is nothing at all wrong with fighting for social change. The problem is that when that change creates a privilege class, not equality but superiority, it is problematic.

"Woke" ideology supports this type of ideology.

I'm very much a liberal myself, but I don't know how reliable a survey like that would be when it's asking people to define a word rather than offer a moral evaluation of the concept.

One could quote easily imagine a Republican thinking "oh yeah it means: 'to understand social injustice'" and then turn around and say "well I don't care about the injustice that I see, so I won't do anything. Also, they make up a lot of BS on top of what they accurately perceive".

There's nothing wrong with being aware of and wanting to make changes.
