How to get hired as an Indian woman?

It has been found that Pakistanis have to send 50% more applications to secure a job in the UK. I assume it's the same for Indians as we are frequently grouped together.

In India also, it is an uphill battle for those who belong to the general category and not ST/SC/BC (the socioeconomically weaker people who are the majority in India and still have positions reserved for them in educational institutions and jobs)

So an Indian who is classified as "general" is the minority everywhere and has to be self-employed which is problematic.

Most people who belong to this socioeconomic background don't find occupations like waitress, nanny, air hostess and so on desirable. So please don't suggest working at, for instance, McDonald's in a foreign country. Classism is very real, especially in the Indian society.

Another key point to remember is that Indian men are seen as more competent than their female counterparts. Perhaps they work harder or is it sexism?

What can help an Indian woman? Looking more white? Having a certain accent? Being incredibly smart?

Reality of being hired has always been Nepotistic at its core while trying to present as a meritocratic system. The higher you get the more evident this becomes. You will never truly escape favoritism.

That said there are ways around it. An accent and how you present can certainly help. A large part of hiring is picturing yourself working with a person. Their ability to fit in with and match a group identity is valuable - and in many, but certainly not all, occupations justified.

With most hiring process being at a distance and lacking the opportunity to present yourself in person a name does become key. However the name primarily serves as an identifier to you as an applicant. Overriding it with a stronger identity can therefore make it obsolete. A catchy or funny title to your application, description of self and alike that is more memorable than a name does help minimize the impact of alienation that might otherwise occur.

Of course long-term, with the logic that the best applicant is the most useful, a hiring process that excludes factors for potential bias might prove beneficial. That will not help anyone today but can always be something to move towards as a community.

Generally - when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Years and years ago I remember my then employer had an Indian woman brought here. She walked around in traditional Indian garb (in cold German autumn), did not shake the hands of men (90% of employees were men) and had an air of superiority around her (because she came from an ex-Maharaja family or something). Long story short, the company sent her back to India after one month.
So, my advise would be be open, friendly and communicative, to dress in Western clothing and befriend some of the local women to see how they are doing.

I'd suggest being more qualified for that job. You've got to look at the qualifications of the other women. Women tend to apply for jobs they are over qualified for because they are easier, more fulfilling and leaves them much more free time.

You just have to bank on the place being really diverse. Work on your CV and perhaps make yourself stand out. Its a numbers game.
