I’m sure by now many of you have seen the video of Steven Crowder talking about his divorce, seemingly bewildered and frustrated that his wife can file for divorce without his permission.
It’s not surprising to learn of this, considering the other video leaked of what very clearly appears to be him verbally and psychologically abusing his wife.
But it got me thinking, how many people believe that it’s wrong that one spouse can leave a marriage without the other’s approval or consent?
Should marriage be mutually filed? Should it stay the same or should changes be made?
It really should be no matter what has happened no matter who hurt who because that's usually the case is somebody hurting the other person so they get angry and they want to hurt back grow up understand that you came into the relationship as friends and if you have children this is a teaching moment and they listen to everything and from the beginning of the divorce to the end of the divorce they are paying attention and you are teaching them who to be in life if something like this happens to them later on that's the most important it's not who gets wet or who hurt who is teach your children who to be in life and you should not be doing it in front of your children somewhere somehow somebody made a mistake somebody did something selfish somebody kept growing in the other person didn't those are all grounds for divorce or something to be talked about and fixed it is what it is and it is what you make it when you have one person that is unhappy another person that is angry another person that is hurt instead of talking about it and fixing it you think you're the right one so you have to explode and vent understandable but it is what it is and it is what it's going to be make it the right choice if you know you're going to split for sure do it the right way especially if you have kids

Seems more of a case that he feels betrayed by his wife, I would feel the same if my husband decided to divorce me.
Divorce is really a raw deal for men more so in America than litteraly any other country in the world. 80%of divorces are intiated by women here who ensure they get full child custody by manipulating their unsuspecting husband into a domestic incident where they can claim abuse for the court case, he gets a restraining order put on him and barred from his family home, loses access to his kids. Then his ex wife is given half of everything he has spent his life earning including his pension. Then he has to pay a certain sum of alimony for decades and if he can't pay or loses his income he gets jailed. Then he has to pay child support for kids he can't see or has limited access too. Meanwhile he's sitting in some motel room alone while his ex wife has moved in some other guy that she was likely cheating with all along behind his back, he sees his kids more than the ex husband does basically living his life and of course his ex wife never has to go out and get a job.
Do you not think its strange all these videos coming out? Seems like it's all a set up for the divorce. Steven Crowders wife must be a very cold unfeeling person. I'm reminded of Brendan Fraser and Johnny Depp cases. Anyway that's what I see in America as a foreigner living here.

Men gain half of the custody cases they actually take to court. Problem is most men don't fight for their kids. Vast majority of custody disputes never even reach the court. 3. Not even when women arrive at the police station with fracture bones and a black eye they are believed when they say their husband is abusive. 4. Only about 30% of what is settled for the ex husband to pay ends up being paid.

During a domestic disturbance report a husband will be put out of the family home and given a restraining order even if he is the one being assaulted. 4. 1. I always hear the 70% stat. Never the 35%. Almost like people want to make it sound worse than it is. 2. Actually we do. If we fight we equals odds to win. 3. Yes I read about that single case. I am sure it happened 5 or six more times than that. Doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of the situations women are not believed. That is just a fact. 4. You didn't understood me. It's not 30% that is settled. It's that, on average, we pay 30% of what was settled. Meaning we don't pay fully the supposed life ending amounts that people claim we do.
If divorce had to be a mutual agreement there would be millions of people who were trapped in abusive and violent relationships. You DEFINITELY shouldn’t need your spouse’s permission to leave.
Even the most agreed to and mutually arranged divorces have a bit of imbalance in that regard. It is usually one spouse that wants the divorce, and the other might not like it but agree just to keep some semblance of peace. Sometimes it's the only way to keep as much as possible to divide between the divorcing pair, and not having all the assets paid to the lawyers on each side of the case.
"Should" is a loaded word. It is judgmental and overbearing the way I see them. I also think that marriage is as strongly biased against men these days as the institution of marriage was biased against women in the past. That doesn't make either bias correct or fair.
To answer the question; mutual agreement in divorce is never as mutually agreeable as one might like. So 'should' is all high and noble, like 'Thou shalt...' but fails miserably in real life, in my consideration.

I believe that to get married (or be in a relationship) both people must consent, but for divorcing (or breaking up) only one spouse needs to make the decision, because you can't force someone to get in or stay in a situation they can't live in. A friend mine is divorcing his wife, and apparently she "doesn't agree" with it. In my opinion that she agrees or not is irrelevant, a person can't be forced into a marriage or relationship they no longer want part in, especially if they have a good reason for wanting out - and he has very good and justified reasons.
My wife disagrees with me, says that even if law doesn't require for the spouse getting divorced to agree, it's still a "bastard thing" to divorce without even giving a chance of reconciliation - but if your spouse is abusive, violent, or a criminal, you can't stay with them.

Regarding the legal status of divorce, I'm really not sure. I think it should be perfectly fine for someone to walk away and leave their spouse's home and basically ghost them. (Unless the other spouse is financially dependent on them. In which case it's not okay.) But as far as the legal dissolution of a marriage, I can see the merits in the argument for that having to be mutual. It's a complicated subject, though.
Geez, what a minefield of a question! I've been wondering something like this for a while. No fault divorce has caused so many broken families and problems, especially with one side of the divorce getting rewarded at the expense of the other. Yet some sort of tyrannical control is just as wrong, in the other direction. So I am honestly not sure.
It seems like we should be able to say two things: People should not leave marriages frivolously or for selfish reasons. People should be able to leave marriages that are abusive.
But how the heck do you legislate or even culturally incentivize both of those outcomes?

You want to sleep around with multiple women. You don't want to be tied down and committed anymore. Any of these could be reasons for men or women. Allow some reasons or a lot more common for one sex as opposed to the other.
No, because the marriage relationship, and most especially the parental relationship, is not built on those feelings. If it is, it is a shallow and transitory relationship. Because those feelings will not last no matter what relationship you're in, ever. Yet we all want to have parents and a spouse who love us our entire lives, no matter what. That love is not built on feelings, though they are important. It is built on a decision. A commitment of the will. Not how you feel in the moment.
And so when those feelings of boredom or lack of affection or desire inevitably come up, the question becomes, how serious were your vows? Were they based on you feeling positive towards them in the moment, or did you truly mean it when you said, "in good times and bad, till death do us part"?
Marriage as a lifelong commitment through good times and bad is meaningless if in theory and in practice you can change your mind and when most people actually do.
I don't even see the point. Forget about financial issues to marriage. What good is a promise I'll pick you up Wednesday and give you a ride if I can change my mind Tuesday and decide I don't want to? What good is a promise of til death do us part if you don't mean it and everyone knows most people don't mean it since half (or now more) don't actually do this?
All I can find on YouTube about Crowder "abusing" his wife are a bunch of far left sources calling him names over what seems like a perfectly normal argument between couples. It already needs both partners approval, just like marriage. However, anyone partner can always apply for parting on their own and even that is a must, to be fair. The one partner divorce is only granted if one is really bad and has failed the partner, like if he is gay and will not have sex, or beats her or is adulterer etc. So all things being equal, its just about a okay law. However, execution's of these laws in the real world sometimes fall short.
I think in that case we’d have a lot more estrangements. Married people eventually living separate lives. Marriage rates would plummet and lifetime cohabitation would be the norm.
I think you should be able to walk but then you would leave everything behind. You should not be able to take the others stuff. Otherwise you need to prove and win in a divorce court. Basically prove that the partner has made the relationship unsustainable.

Nobody should be forced to be married to anyone. I have my own personal beliefs on marriage. Unless there is cheating or domestic abuse people should at least do what they can to make kr work.

That right there, is why I'd vote on No. If one of the 2 partners are abusive, and/or when they believe that a relationship's supposed to favor them, they could use that against their victim of a "partner".
There has to be mutual agreement to get married in the first place. If she wants to get divorced and he doesn't, at least this would give him some bargaining power before the divorce. Of course, she will just claim he "abused " her and is a "danger" to the children.
Break ups are NEVER mutual. As for situations like Crowder, his wife should be allowed to leave but she should get NOTHING, no alimony, no custody, no division of assets, no child support, NOTHING! She wrecked her own home so she should go back to she streets empty-handed. End no-fault divorce.
After watching the way he behaves, I wouldn’t want anything to do with him. However, I wouldn’t let him get away with only paying child support either. He’s going to take care of his children, provided that he’s not also abusive to them.
I believe its both. Yes and no. Some state laws are diffrent. Women who are abused have a right to divorce and the husband doesn't need to be present. Other states make then stand in front of their abusers. Im thinking diffrent circumstances deserve the spouse a choice for being alone when filing. If your not seeking to gain compensation or things. It should be alone or escaping an abuser. Any other case especially seeking alimony or things then you need to be together.
Well divorce is an illusiomment to marriage. Some States are diffrent than others. Yes its a piece of paper. But States are diffrent. They make you follow said laws. I agree with you but in the united states we have to follow the laws of our state. We just can't get around them. Im divorced and if I would of divorced my wife I could of seen jail time. I would of abondoned her. According to where I live. If I didn't seek her out then it would of been harsh on me. I live in a state the women is right and the man is wrong. Even though she cheated on me and had another mans baby. I guess we make it complicated.
My brother's ex wife filed for divorce last year and I believe it was her father who insisted on it. She always does what her parents tell her to do as they never liked my brother. Both my brother and his ex wife have gone their own ways but don't have feelings for one another anymore. The only thing his ex gets is child support and she has her own car and the little girls live with her parents. My brother gets them every Thursday and every other weekend.

I think in most divorces there is very little that the parties agree on. Some people would not agree to divorce out of spite. There could also be financial concerns as well
I think it would actually be kind of funny if marriage required both parties in order to dissolve it because then people would have to be really serious when making these oaths.
It depends on the reasons. In case of abuse, definitely it doesn't have to be a mutual agreement. But in other cases, such as loveless marriage, yes the other partner gets a say in it.

The Institution really doesn't serve any kind of propose if either party can leave at any time for any reason. You should at least have a 3rd party agree the terms were breached.
No, being forced to stay in something takes away our freedom. It’s dangerous for marriages with abuse since the abuser rarely want the other party to leave.
As a woman who got married very young (I was 16 he was 23) I absolutely agree with and believe in no fault and one party divorce. Anyone who doesn’t wants marriage to be a prison not a union.

As to the question, no,, but we should return to "at-fault" divorce unless there is a mutual agreement. If one or the other cheats or is physically abusive, that person should forfeit his/her share of the marital estate. If both are, then still split it, but now the innocent party is often the one who gets screwed over.
