Why do people shorten other people's names?

• Robert : Rob
• Michael : Mike
• Katherine : Kath
• Christopher : Chris

Do people shorten your name? Does it bother you?

I don't mind it for people I'm close with as it's a way of expressing familiarity.

I think it's cute and it's a way of showing affection or familiarity as you pointed it out. Unfortunately my name can't be shorten but I would like if it was. It wouldn't bother me.

Makes their name more personal. In some cases, like John or Frank, they are made longer.
