From your brief example here. I'd say she was in the wrong for calling him that, as that word is associated with racism, being sub-human and slavery. She should have been raised better and taught better. There's no excuse for a woman of her age to go around calling someone the n-word. However, I feel his reaction was a bit much. Racism is still alive and well, but others, who are racially profiled, and discriminated against don't respond in such a way. They just keep walking.
I feel as if his reaction was extreme.
I know not all people of colour behave badly but I feel like people of colour (mainly African-Americans) commit so much violence now that it's now a known stereotype of them. Some so many TV shows and movies portray African-Americans, as violent, hostile, and a ganster.

I agree with you, but the thing that pisses me off most is how these people play the victim, instead of stopping to think, "Maybe we've done something to make her feel that way about us"

But you're right. It's really obvious that some groups react more extremely then others. I see black and Muslim people especially feel they need to use violence to be respected

Hard to say. I've seen very strange stuff happening in America since I moved here. Most people are lovely but then there's these strange very loud crazy people that are very rude, very insulting and down right mean for no reason. They believe they can say anything or do anything without consequences and probably think that way because up until the point they meet the consequences there has been no consequences.

Poorly. In order for words to justify a violent response, they need to be something seriously reflecting an immediate threat. Simply tossing out racial slurs doesn't count. Something like "Time to die, [slur]!"? Yeah, that'd call for a decking (absent some very specific circumstances), but not just the word itself.

Oh this would definitely be a tread lightly situation. Both are in the wrong: her for saying it, him for escalating it to becoming physical.

I wouldn't be able to just walk away and ignore it because I'd be worried about violence.

But whether I would step in, take out my phone and record, or just stand by in case, would depend a lot about the details that would be far too numerous to list here.
