What would happen if a man punched a woman in the face in public?

If an angry impatient man having a bad day comes across a woman getting in his way, like at an ATM or at a store. A woman he doesn't even know or has ever seen before. He punches her in the nose in a fit of rage, breaking it.

What would be the consequence? From what I hear, as long as the fight is outside nothing really matters, or so I've heard.

Would onlookers just stare/gawk at this? Would the man walk away and not get in trouble?

i think people would either hurry away from him. or all stop to look in shock. then when he's gone come to assist her and call the police on him. i dont think someone will confront him. personally if it seemed like he just hit a stranger than i'd hurry away cause i dont want to get punched too. if i was faraway enough i would just look, wouldn't do anything since i'm sure someone else will. for the consequences he probs will face charges of assault. this type of thing obv gets you consequences

You may or may not be referencing the guy in NYC who was recently going around punching women, but if so then we all saw the answer to what the average person would apparently do — nothing, maybe just record.
