Our beaches in Texas fyi usually have brain eating bacteria from the oil refineries dumping waste into the gulf. I think there’s a state size oxygen-deprived hole in the gulf from the BP spill. And we’re still arguing about fcking pipes running through our national parks. Jesus.

The flooding in new York is likely down to poor city planning and land management. Basically getting rid of surrounding swamps, wetlands and marshes for real estate. Also flood control systems often just move the problem downstream. For instance a flood plain is where a river naturally spills out on to but if you build flood defences there to build or a farmer does to keep his land flood free and everyone does this then this creates a massive problem on down river.

Fact is we depend on fossil fuels for energy even if we are getting 25% from renewables. A lot of these ecological disasters I believe are down to the companies lobbying our politicians like the water situation in flint with the democrats or the BP oil rig disaster with the republicans or the very recent rail disaster in ohio.

Well it's part of overall climate change. Everything has knock on effects. That's why you see other countries where freak flooding is starting to become a major problem are starting to restore wetlands, swamps and marshes, even dismantling flood defences. Building contractors aren't allowed to build homes and buisness on flood plains.
There are many examples of man made ecological disasters caused by humans. Stuff like getting rid of the buffalo to introduce non native European cattle on the plains, the oklahoma dust bowl caused by over farming, all those forest fires caused by droughts where water and rivers are dammed to provide water for the west coast and not burning in controlled burning like the native Americans used to do.
There are plenty of examples of environmentalists & governments working to restore natural environments. A great example of this was a farmer in Australia who during increasing drought basically came up with restorative agricultural to regreen his land by reintroducing native species of weeds etc and restoring the river to its natural state. He successfully promoted this throughout Australia, the kicker was thar in the end he got put off his land by a mining company who strip mined it.

Look at your graph. When did the freak flooding start? Start of the 20th century and just rose and rose. This coincides with industrial farming the draining of swamps/marches/wetlands, building flood defences to protect housing built on flood plains. Deforestation doesn't help either.
So when you have periods of lots of rain you have ever increasing cities of concrete that catch the rain water whereas b4 the natural vegetation soaked it up and this flows into the river, flood plains upstream which used to naturally flood no longer flood, swamps/, wetlands/marches no longer exist to soak up excess rain and flood water, flood defences send the problem down river and when it gets to the big cities the rain water can't drain because the rivers are too high and it backs up meaning the sewers and drains overflow with water from the river, flood pumps can only pump overflowing water back into the overflowing river. Then of course the flood defences are breached. It's a regional man made problem that can be eased simply by restoring and setting aside flood plains, swamps, march lands, wetlands, building water catchments, more green areas in cities. Stop building flood defences upstream. Makes sense. I mean if the river naturally floods in certain areas then instead of building houses there and building flood defences just let it flood. Farmers too shouldn't be allowed to build flood defences
