What do you think of when you hear the term "spick and span"?

I always heard it used to denote "clean".

And then there is this stuff, invented in 1935

But where did the term originate?

"According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it derives from the Old Norse term spán-nýr, with nýr meaning new, and spán meaning chip (as in wood chip). Basically, as Pascal Tréguer explained on his word histories blog, span-new meant “as new as a freshly cut wooden chip."

I think of the garage. When I was younger and I got into trouble, my dad would have me clean the garage. And he'd always say "I want it to be spic and span".
