As I understand it, the income level of any given sportsman/woman is proportionate to how much money they earn for their employer, which in turn is based upon their popularity. If women's "soccer" (i. e. football) isn't as popular as the men's equivalent, then it's only fair they aren't given an equal salary.

When it comes to sports like football (or "soccer"), men are just naturally better at it. Women make better swimmers, men are stronger and faster, and therefore make better weightlifters, runners and "soccer"-players. Their incomes will reflect these facts.

think it like supply and demand. There isn’t a demand for women’s sports as there is in men and because of that, less profits. Can’t pay someone 6 figures when the company isn’t bringing in demands to support it.

As to whether it ought to earn the same that is a different question.

It would be extraordinarily foolish to argue that all sports people should be paid the same regardless of the sport's popularity and the ability of the individual sports person. Should the top cricketer be paid the same as the top baseball player in the US when nobody goes to cricket matches. Or the inverse in Australia?

That is clearly a nonsense. More popular sports are going to be paid better than fringe sports and will broadly correlate to gate receipts.

It is clearly equally a nonsense to expect men and women's version of a sport to be paid equally when attendance isn't the same. In some sports, the female version is more popular like beach volleyball.

OK we know why, but men's beach volleyball teams have to suck it up that only their girlfriends will be watching their game and even then the gfs will be chatting with each other and not actually watching the game. Meanwhile the women's volleyball stadium is packed out. Men simply can't expect equal payment in beach volleyball.

last women's world cup was the first tournament in which they sold the rights and attempted to make a profit, the revenue was negative... minus 100 million dollars

so, maybe that's why the pool prize is a bit bigger on the man's side, since they actually earn more income

if women want to earn more money as a tournament, they should just play it in the USA... then the hosting would cost a lot less, and the profits would on the positive numbers

Who cares... If your sport drives major interest and that draws big advertising dollars and merchandise purchases then you can command higher salaries. It doesn't matter what the sport is or what the sex, race, or religion of the players are. Men's basketball draws more of a crowd than men's curling... They are all athletes and men, but they make different salaries because of the demand for the product. It's all about the profit. If you produce the cash flow then you make more money. If they don't pay you, then you walk away from the job and they lose all the revenue with a lack of crowd drawing players. The bigger the revenue, the harder it is for them to refuse your demands. They less you produce, the less power you have to make demands. So the point is, if you want more, you have to produce more. It's your responsibility as a player. It's not about if you have a penis or a vagina...

Women's football just isn't that good. It's plain facts.

Sure, it will rise to prominence eventually, and the marketing potential is massive. But it's just stupid to expect women to be paid more than men, when the crowds and market just isn't there yet.

Look at the Women's World Cup currently taking place versus last year's Men's World Cup. How many people attended in person and watched on TV? That's the economics that determines how much money each should make. Women's soccer has come a long way, but it's not yet equal to the Men.

Yes but there is less money in women's soccer. Watching the women's world cup recently its not hard to see why. Womens soccer like women's basketball is almost completey dependant on the revenue brought in by the men's teams.

They now make the same. But since I have taken my daughter to a woman soccer game I see why. The seats are cheaper, and they don't sell out the staduim. Maybe more women should start backing women sports and start actually spend their money to see women play sports. But most will complain it isn't fair, and never go to a game.
