Does anyone else dislike the idea of an employer running a background check?

I understand employers need to know who they are hiring to an extent. We don’t want child molesters working as a pediatrician. I still feel like this is a bit of an invasion of privacy.

They've never phased me. If you don't have anything to hide, there's nothing to worry about. And no, while they are not fail-proof, they do keep -some- of the scum and trash from getting hired. I know the manager of the housekeeping department at my job has complained multiple times because candidates she wanted to hire failed their background checks: mostly the drug portion, or they had a previous criminal record.

The only downside is, they only block obvious offenders. Background checks can't stop people with nasty attitudes, poor customer service and people skills, or bad work ethics from getting hired.

I've required background checks multiple times because the work I was doing dealt with confidential information or we dealt with vulnerable populations (think seniors and kids).

It's good to do your diligence on new hires.

Not exactly a breach of privacy, either - in most cases, you need to provide identifying info like your name, address, social identifier number, etc, to be employed.

If you don't want to do s police check, you also have the right to refuse. You just won't qualify for the job at that point.

I, will, check, backgrounds, always...

and only one type of people have always had reserves about this... those with a questionable background

I worked in a K-12 school system and I had to undergo a background check. I understood why this was important.

Back groundchecks give you an idea, but it isn't always absolute. My best employee of 10 years is a two time felon. He turned his life around.
