I applied online to a new hotel they're opening and they didn't get back to me, but then found out they're doing a job fair so I went to that. The job fair was advertised as having "Walk-in interviews" and "On the spot hiring."
There was no "on the spot hiring" as advertised. They told everyone they will be getting back to them by Friday. I was told by my interviewer, after asking myself, that I will hear back from someone by Friday and that training would begin April 1st.
I waited all Friday and didn't hear back from anyone. So on Monday, I called them and was told reviewing the applications is taking longer than expected, and I should hear back from someone on Wednesday. Wednesday came and nothing.
So I called again on Thursday and asked to speak to the hiring manager directly, who conveniently happened to be at a meeting. But I left my contact information and was told I'll either get a phone call or e-mail.
Today was supposed to be the start of training, and still nothing! The job postings are still up. I decided I'm not gonna call them again.
I can't stand this sort of thing! I'm a responsible person. When I give someone a date or time or say I'll do something, I stick by it! But these people seem to have zero care and accountability. What's worse, is if you did this to THEM, you would get an earful!
I'm pissed, because I could be in the French Caribbean at now, instead I have to be at their mercy and can't even make plans, because they might still call me.
Is this normal for American employers to do? Why would they tell me they'll get back to me by a certain date, then not stick by it? If they don't wanna hire me, they should just say so, so I won't waste my time and can do other things.

I have heard many insane stories about American employers and their treatment of workers or applicants, so what you describe is just the average normal, as bad as it is. And I see demands for drug testing or fingerprinting in the same disparaging category.
That stuff is a pain in the ass. The dumbest thing is, at my last job I was working under the supervision of law enforcement, they could've just phoned dispatch and know my background in 2 minutes. Instead, they made me go to the Sheriff's office and get finger printed. Then again when they rehired me.
Even so, ex-criminals and former drug addicts needs to work too.
Absolutely illegal and an invasion of privacy here in Europe!
Seriously? Because here it's so normal.
The unions and the courts would bring a quick stop to such shenanigans. Employers aren't even allowed to ask women if they want to have children. Or, they could ask, but the female applicants are allowed to lie.
The US job market is like FB dating... they have the spot filled but are keeping their options open in case the negotiation goes bad or the person doesn't pass a drug test. So you have to be just like a hot girl with FB dating. If your not the 1st choice walk away move on.
That's fucked up. They should just be straight up with that. How long am I supposed to wait?
Here if they see a gap in your work history, they'll question it.
And I don't know about other states, but in California, your employer isn't required to give to the reason for firing you.
Employers also aren't obligated to give you a reason to not hire you.
Some European said it's crazy how in America, they'll have you hand over your keys and will literally have security standing over you while you clear out your office.
