What's a good answer to give people who pester you abput being single?

Question

I'm often asked why I'm single and for some reason this year it's bugging me. I'm not sure how to answer. Whether it's part of some guy's way of flirting or a comment made by folks in the community who know me and as that along with "don't you *want* to be happy?" I just shrug. What's a nice short answer that's not rude?

In my opinion the best answer is none at all. Seriously the second someone used to pester me about relationships, I’d just smile and quietly keep doing whatever I was doing. It will for sure create an awkward air, and that’s the point. For them to sit with their own line of unwarranted questioning and see that I’m not interested in talking about it. That’s a boundary and there’s nothing rude about setting it.

just say that you like being single. this type of stuff only tends to bother older people.  if you are still single/ never married in your 50s, there is always a reason for it.

I’m not sure I would know what to say, but I scrolled through the comments and I think @HollyK21 has the best answer. Just allow the awkward silence to take place instead of you giving an awkward answer.

I just say thanks for your concern but I have my reasons , if they keep pestering me about it , i will then say it’s because I was tied down to my ex for a long time so I want to enjoy my freedom and play my cards better this time around

Being single is a choice, and it's a gift. To be confident, pay your bills and have zero drama is a gift. You keep all the dusty men away because they know you are not a pickmesha. I've been single for 10 year's. I tell people "I'm unwrapping my gifts, I don't have time for a boyfriend." Eventually people will stop " nagging " after they realize you made the correct choice to be single. Living the dream is another phrase I use too. Welcome to the " We Don't Care Club"., because we have paid our dues to get here 🇨🇦😎♥️

That’s it. Then you just stare at them. Don’t explain. Don’t laugh. Let them sit there and try to figure out if you’re joking. They’ll either laugh awkwardly or change the subject. Either way, you win.

As for me when people ask if I’m single I say the following.

I’m Single & Accepting Applications.

If people ask me why I’m single I say the following.

I’m single because I simply choose to be as of the moment & if I happen to meet that special wonderful someone I’ll welcome a relationship all the way.

In the meantime I’m enjoying me time. I love in independence, I love my freedom, I love that I can do whatever I want, do whoever I want, when I want & I don’t have to answer to anyone or check-in with anyone. As for me I’m doing my own thing & I love it.

I get asked that every now and then. I usually tell them that in my earlier years of dating, most women in my age range at the time wanted to have children. I really wasn't interested in raising a family, so that excluded a lot of potential partners.

I was somewhat dating a lady a few years ago who has a PhD in psychology. My gosh she was asking me all of these dumb analytical questions as to why I was single, trying to "coax" out of me the reason! LOL... Well she was divorced, so it looks like marriage didn't exactly work for HER. Anyway she was usually fun to hang out with.

I just tell them the truth and that usually makes them shutup about it. I have a chronic health issue that is preventing me from dating. They know I can only do limited things in a week. So when I remind them its simply not possible they stop and probably realize they were being a dick.

Happens at work to in other ways. I work part time and for limited hours. I basically spend the energy I can on trying to heal myself and work. So sometimes they invite me to for example a fun activity or they expect me to have done something in my private life and then I remind them its not possible for me. Does create a lot of good will from my boss since it reminds them I am working the amount I do because I genuinely can't do more not because I am spending all my energy elsewhere.

I know how you feel. It bugs me too. Truth is the world has changed and singledom is freedom and independence. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't want to be in a relationship but I know what I am looking for and I won't stop until I find it. In the meantime I'm working on myself until I do. And I won't settle. We have only one life and it's senseless getting into a relationship just to keep up with social pressure. I'm alone not lonely.

Depends who is asking and where. If it's at work and it's women that you're not friends with who are just being nosy I'd say ," I keep my personal and work life separate. Thanks for asking." If it's a man or a woman who has a son then they're probably asking because you're pretty and/or have a lot going for yourself. A lot of times people are thrown off when someone like that is single.

Say it is “kismet” denoting to the redundancy of their question because it will only happen if it is meant to be. It is really just a funny way of saying shut up but some people don’t understand that either e. g. my aunt when i hit her with that line. I didn't know that was a thing. No one ever asks me if I'm single, unless a guy hits on me in a really obvious way and everyone ends up talking about it. I'd just say you haven't met the right man yet, or that you prefer being single.
