Do you think stereotypes are pointless and a waste of time?

While there may be some truth in stereotypes, many times they aren't true at all. And it leads to bigotry.

Stereotypes are consistent because humans are consistent. Stereotypes are based on the majority. Stereotypes exist because there are consistent patterns of behavior over decades. Stereotypes are not fair to all people though. There are always exceptions.

so, how do I deal with stereotypes? I prepare myself to be able to deal with the worst but when I’m confronted I still trear whoever with respect. At the first indication that I’m now dealing with the common stereotype and not the exception, I’m ready. I gave them the benefit of the doubt but I won’t fall prey to the lowest form of the stereotype.

Not easy… Some stereotypes are funny and true, others just negative and bigoted… Fair chance there is some truth in both the positive and negative ones.

The Dutch are always considered direct, the Germans orderly, the Belgians a bit chaotic… Italians and Spanish have temperament, the Icelandic fuck the first date of they know there’s no close family line, checked with an app.

The way to judge a person is to judge them on a person to person basis.

Stereotypes do not just come out of the ether. They're always some nugget of truth to them so they are kind of unavoidable. But it's the division of races that make this a problem. People need to embrace differences. That's the problem. We don't do enough of that. We tend to stick with our tribes because it comfortable. But you don't grow if you always do what's easy.

Yes…and no. It’s like police profiling. We take an educated guess based on what we see, and gather more facts. So in the end…we aren’t stereotyping. Make sense?

Stereotypes don't exist in a vacuum. They also are not created in a vacuum. There is always a kernel of truth at the heart of every stereotype.
