People tend to be reluctant to speak their mind, as they fear the consequences. Once they're given permission to spill their guts, the dam breaks and nothing can hold it back. Look at what happened when Trump gave people permission to eliminate political correctness and believe they are entitled to a bigger piece of the pie. Many people who resented others getting special treatment demanded special treatment for themselves, and society became more selfish overnight.
People see others spew hatred online, with no significant consequences, so they feel that has given them the right to spew hatred also. It's rare to see people showing consideration for how their choices impact others. It seems to be all about a reaction to their perception that they were held back by others who were given opportunities. That has led to superiority and entitlement being rampant online. These people are speaking out more in real life, also, but they tend to hold back to avoid consequences to them (seeing the consequences to others as irrelevant).
Allowing anonymous postings has made things even worse. That's the reason I rarely respond to an anonymous post and don't allow anonymous responses on my postings.
As far as placing a label on these people, labels are just used to legitimize our choices. By having a label, we can blame the label (which we see as out of our control) and don't have to be held accountable for our own choices, words and actions. The most common label parents place on their kids is "lazy." This is a label of the individual, not the behavior. Kids often blindly believe whatever their parents tell them, so if they're labeled as lazy, they must be lazy. Now they take that label with them through life, using the label as an excuse for not taking action in any area (after all... they're lazy).
I have absolutely said similar things to many people with mixed results :D
I also don’t say things on here broadly IRL which one just doesn’t do in general. Why? Because it stupid to do so. Cancel culture and more will harm you for simply stating what you believe. You don’t like it? Tough.
But here everyone can hear unfiltered thoughts which does have benefit to others as well whether you agree with it or not. People used to be able to have real conversations but no people get hysterical :)
Obviously there is no digital equivalent for the old Glasgow handshake! :-)
It's good to see though, that authorities at least go after the worst online behavior, it's obvious that these people never thought there would be consequences by the look on their face when they stand before a judge.
I don't know.
I generally think many people are cowards and it takes bravery to overcome that.
privately I have always been very honest and direct. Some people usually liars hate that, meanwhile honest folk love it.
of cause online trolling for kicks and giggles is something else.
False. I worked in customer service for years and people would regularly say the most racist, homophobic, and in a few cases pedophilic stuff i've ever heard. I can personally attest that these days people are just as shitty offline as they are online.
It was not. It was in person at the hotel check-in desk.
Wow that's brave of them. Did you have to call security on them or throw them out as a guest? Sounds intense.
Totally true. I actually think online is like liquor. It brings the true person out.
Especially when you’re a fckin anon! I hate anons. I give girls leeway on that because guys barrage them with dick pics. But guys who anon on Gag are fckin pussies.
I think a lot of folks are more daring here, especially when it comes to anger. I'd like to think that the statements I provide in the advice and opinions I give our well excepted by my friends and family that I see every day.
I would. I'm not scared of anybody and I have proven it in my life multiple times already.
Damn, if I could only be that brave hehe.
true for the most part. though i work in healthcare and some people have disgusting behavior in person as well, they just don't care.
Customers/patients/clients, are kind of an exception in my opinion, because the level of authority isn't really the same? But I get you. Like I said, I deal with people all the time. ALL kinds. It's a nasty looking rainbow at this point lol.
online its a free for all, always has been due to no repercussions, its gotten so much worse. on here other social platforms. online its a lot of people who have way too much time on their hands. but there always is that one person with literally nothing to lose.
in person it depends on the person--we literally have had security kick out family members and patients due to their behavior.
sad how low most of this world has sunk 🤷♀️
it's not about being a coward. It's about knowing how bat shit crazy people are in real life. These moronic liberals might actually hurt someone if people argued with them in person, the way they do on the interweb. I don't call it cowardly to engage in self-preservation. Nothing wrong with speaking your mind where the bad people can't hurt you.
This is not so much a matter of cowardice as it is an exercise of good judgment in most cases. Nobody wants a physical confrontation as it can lead to substantial injuries and serious legal problems.
Oh it's cowardice lol. The only reason people are so brave here is BECAUSE they don't usually have the physical or legal ramifications as you said. If it had the same ones here, I bet they wouldn't even say HALF the things they do here lol.
@Sweetsurprize. Women are especially guilty of this as they knew ait of men would kick their ass.
I try not to engage with people like that. Even people I disagree with are usually non confrontational and can engage in an an intelligent manner.
I would lol. But yeah it’s like people who talk behind your back. But can never bring it up to your face.
if the elephant in the room needs addressing. I will address it
people who get upset at me online would back down offline
Painfully true. I am probably the only person where the opposite is true and I say much worse things in real life than on here.
Just because someone wouldn’t say something to someone’s face doesn’t mean they don’t feel that way.
Yeah true, but at that point, since it doesn't get said (and people aren't mind readers), its just either stays INSIDE that person or they get frustrated and maybe take it out on someone else that's innocent or they self-destruct. It's very interesting the dynamic of people and the psychology of online vs. offline. Maybe there's more suffering in silence or they go to their therapist to let those kinds of frustrations out. Not here.
I wonder, I really wonder, what life was like as an adult during the 80's and at least early part of the 90's and before that.
Now, it's the power of the pen (or the mind), when before it was the power of the fist lol.
Most people live in fear more of physical consequences than virtual or mental ones? or the realness of offline.
I will say that despite there being more people, most access to weapons, more drugs and more mental illness, violent crime is still lower than several decades ago. Causation does not equal correlation, but it’s an interesting comparison regardless.
Where's your stats on that? Also, more people are educated and fear more of the consequences these days if that were indeed the case. There's more to lose especially in reputation. People want to cherish that.
They’re still lower than their highs in the 90’s, but I guess they are back on the rise.

That's because most people don't want to be thought of as an asshole in RL, with the social consequences that brings, but online no one knows who they are.
definitely true... and definitely not within a few feet distances
100% certainly true , they are all super brave behind a keyboard.
I my observation, and for some people, true.
possibly true of most people but I've always been an arsehole and offend people routinely.
Its rarely popular but it may help that im a tall guy noone seems to want to try and punch.
Im honest and insensitive in all things.
its my art
Sweetsurprise would you do something to me that I could do in return to you? You asked it.
Sure, but that would depend first of all on what it is. And what my capabilities are and how I'm feeling. I'm usually not afraid or at least I try not to be (especially online). But offline, I just discovered about myself, I'm different. I have a reputation to uphold and I don't look like your typiical mean bully so at that rate, it would be kinda dificult of me maybe to follow up on your request, whatever that may be.
True unless they’re in their car passing by real quick, then they speed off
Maybe some of them but I definitely would, I'd probably say worse things haha
Nah I'm relatively well behaved even on the internet.
I mean everything I say all the way down to my daughter's panties
True. Anonymity attracts assholes.
Yes thst true I see people say a lot of shit under the anonymous tag gag should get rid of it
Does that include you?
Yes, admittedly sometimes, if I'm self-aware. That is why I asked this question. I work in Customer Service at the moment, and yeah, when it's something positive, I don't hesitate to say it because I know it would make the customer feel good. But when it's something negative, OF COURSE I am going to hold off. I'm not a big woman (I'm like 102 lbs. only) so if I were to evoke a negative response in another woman or man, I don't know, I don't want to physically get hurt or get in a fight unnecessarily.
So yes, I noticed this in myself too. I am more BOLD online than I am offline. Sad but true? I don't know. It's like I can't really be myself too much when I'm outside, but here, I can more or less VENT, RAGE (which I rarely do because I'm not an angry person in general), or do whatever more here, vs. outside.
So you're a coward online?
No lol. I don't think you even got that whole thing I was saying lol. ... Are YOU?
All I am saying is that yes, I think we are ALL more afraid to speak our minds offline because we're more afraid of the physical consequences rather than the emotional/mental ones... not really sure. But I noticed that I do act different offline than I do online. Some people even have a completely fake persona or personas going on online vs. offline. I just think there are more REAL, CONSEQUENCES to offline actions than online ones. That's the problem.
Or some people, they AREN'T scared of both online and offline consequences because they're big people or just don't give a fuck.
Do you get it now? Or am I just talking to a 2 year old? Lol. Maybe the 2-year-old would have more comprehension skills or maturity at least!
Yes. Welcome to the internet
I agree completely
I think it's true.
It's not cowards it's the social order.
Yeah, I Have to admit that You re right.
What's got you triggered sweetsurprise?
Very true indeed
