Eh... What we really need to do is come up with more accurate descriptions of the crime taking place. A human trafficker can be anything from someone helping a family fleeing a civil war to cross the border of another country illegally, to a grungy slaver that kidnaps people and forces heroin into their veins so they'll comply with sex work.

Someone smuggling paying clients over a border doesn't deserve the death penalty. Someone who kidnaps people and forces them into sex slavery isn't someone we want in society.

Not really. In a civilized world the only good reason to kill someone is self defense (or in defense of someone else). Someone who is incarcerated poses no threat to anyone. The only thing killing them would do is satisfy our urge to be uncivilized, which is what they did when they decided to be human traffickers. So, it's a power trip, gloating that our animal brain beat their animal brain. If were going to do that, fine, but we have to stop calling ourselves civilized.

I didn't say you called us civilized. But the majority likes to think we are. I'm merely pointing out that only works if we can bring ourselves to deny ourselves the baser satisfaction of anti-civilization indulgences. That's the central argument against the death penalty, in general: it is not killing in defense of anything, it is killing to make ourselves feel better. That's what animals do, not a civilized species.
Plus, there is the longer argument of martyrdom. It's not likely but it is possible that any criminal has a following. Even if it's their own parents, the chances that someone might seek revenge on the state for killing their kid, even though he "deserved it" is nonzero. Why risk an angry parent with nothing to lose gunning down a stadium or something when you could just let them die of natural causes?
Plus there's always the chance that there was an error and in fact they are innocent.
