Why didn't the doctor ask for my race and just put a race down?

My guess would be that some patients would think that it is "racist" for a doctor to ask that. It is pertinent because there are certain diseases that are more prevalent in certain races. Of course if the doctor got the race incorrect, a patient could always inform the doctor and have it corrected.

Sometimes they don't tell you until you see it on your printed out paperwork.

What context would the doctor have asked in? For most medical things, the patient's race isn't actually diagnostically significant.
