Jacques Bainville, man of extraordinary intelligence, political journalist born in 1879, he is often considered an "ultra-nationalist" and monarchist.

He wrote a book which will make him famous in 1919 "The political consequences of peace" where he criticizes the Treaty of Versailles and where he announces twenty years in advance how the errors of judgment of the victors will lead to the Second World War. He heralded the entire interwar period: the advent of Hitler, the Anschluss, the invasion of Czechoslovakia, the German-Soviet pact, the aggression against Poland and the new European war that followed.

Yes! I would be particularly interested in the thoughts on reparations as there is a parallel in our current world. Doubtless there will be many interesting ideas.

Outside of what Bainville will discuss (and almost unrelated), I was listening to a podcast on unification of Germany 1848 - 1871 last night and it was more complex than I had known. There was a gem of a comment that whilst it was unacceptable to accept an emperor's crown from the people, it was still OK if it came via the traditional aristocratic path of conquest. :)

Yes that sounds very interesting since the treaty of Versailles caused a lot of disruption in Europe.

He also wrote one of, if not the most brilliant analysis of Napoleon. Even if Bainville is not an admirer of Napoleon
