Would a guy put all of this effort into a girl (cooking breakfast, etc.) if he just wanted to be friends?

i can't tell if he is interested in me or not, so I was hoping you could provide some insight! :)

he just recently got out of a bad relationship about 6 months ago with a girl in our grad school program, but no one was too fond of her and she basically walked all over him. another thing that also makes me confused is that he did have a good girl bff last year in our grad program but now she is gone, so I'm not sure if I am "replacing" her now or if it's more than that.

basically, its been 5 "dates (?)" and he hasn't so much as touched me or made a move at all.

--he and I haven't been very close friends. were in the same group of friends in grad school, but don't exactly talk regularly. last year we hung out like 3-4 times a semester, meanwhile in the last 2 weeks we've hung out about 6 times and usually it's me and him

--he randomly asked me to go kayaking over the summer, which I thought was kind of random, but I was ready to give it a go. although I think it might be because I invited him to a group outing to a baseball game a earlier in the summer.

--we had a grad school happy hour and he offered to pick me up and then paid for my drinks there. a bunch of us then danced at a club. at one point we were all sitting down at a table and my friend tried to get me to dance again and he looked at me and said "are you going?" when I got up to dance again, he came with. (but when I got too close he backed away, out of my reach). he drove 4 of us home and even though I was the first house he would have passed on his way home dropping us off, he drove past my place and took everyone else home and I was last.

-- he asked me to hang out the next evening, just me, him, and his roommate. we were drinking so he told me I was staying over just to be safe. I know a while back my good girl friend in our program was over with just him and his roommate (same situation as me). I casually asked if she stayed over before and he was like "no she drove home drunk... so bad." he gave me his bed and he slept on the floor next to me and then said "well now that I know you're OK with this, we'll have to do it again."

--he cooked me breakfast the next morning and during a conversation he told me his first impression of me was a mutual friend saying to him "dude, I know what you're thinking. don't even try. she's not DTF, so basically don't even try." (does this mean he was "thinking" a certain something?)

--i am a swimmer and he wants to come swimming with me even though he basically doesn't know how

--we went out to dinner a few days later, and I never know how to end a dinner date so I always offer money just to see if the guy will offer to pay it. we ended up splitting the bill and then he drove me home and still didn't make a move on me, but made plans for the following week to watch a movie which hasn't happened yet.

can someone please help?
