Do you think that MLKjr would be happy today?

Question

Today is Martin Luther King Jr day, a Federal Holiday in the United States.

61 years ago, MLKjr made his famous "I have a dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. In it, he said...

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Today, 56 years after his death, we have many organizations that emphasize race, including White Supremacist Groups, Racial Quotas in universities and companies, Black Lives Matter, BET (Black Entertainment Television), the Association of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and others.

Do you think MLKjr would be happy with where we are today, or would he still have to hope that his dream will someday come true?

I think maybe he would be amazed that is 2024

and there still are so many followers of hate in color no matter what color you are

and how in 2024 that we still haven't figured out that our God our creator.

used common sense when building us no matter what color you are no matter where you live on this planet he gave every single one of us the ability to adapt to our surroundings to our environment not knowing where we were going to live on this planet are the harsh extreme conditions but he gave us each the ability to adapt to protect us from the harsh elements that this planet has to offer no matter where you live

I don't use sunscreen in the summertime because I love a good tan I look better and I feel better is what I feel

let's see thousands of years ago they didn't have that so no matter what your body had to adapt thank you for trying to protect us dear God

to answer your question I would think that he would just be disappointed that each and every single one of us haven't figured it out something so easy and we still try to change it to something hard it's just pure ignorant.

No, he would not be happy.
I imagine the lack of progress in lifting African American people out of poverty, systemic racism and inequality in access to healthcare and education would be a source of frustration for him.

No. All he would have to do is watch the news and how his people are breaking into stores and just taking whatever they want and robbing stores to take things they can re-sell.
Not things they need like food.

How some of them just beat up innocent people to the point the person ends up in the hospital.

Plus America 🇺🇸 is not at all how he remembered it. It would make him very sad.

Well that dream didn't come true did it? You might have stopped lynching them and even let them sit on the right bus seats, but there's still a 'them and us' mentality that seems decades behind the rest of the Western world.

Depends what the rest of his life was like. Did you read my question... lot of tragedy in that family. As well, it is very hard to rise above trauma and oppression and injustice. Ask any of those suffering today in Nigeria, the migrants suffering in their countries or as they flee to USA, gypsies, romas, the poor stuck on the streets, etc...

I'd hope he is more like Larry Elder or Thomas Sowell. But maybe he'd be more like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton? It's a totally different view... the glass is half full or half empty. People are all different but we can coagulate to view points, and it isn't color... it's how we think, what we experience... and personality.

It be a question of what he's thinking and that... we don't know.

Compared to what? I think that's the key question. Compared to the America of his day? Maybe. Compared to the America of twenty years ago? Hell no.

When I think about how awful the world has become, I remember that fifty years ago (fifty four, now), a young man named Laurence Tureaud legally changed his name to Mister T because it was the only way that he, as a black man, could reliably be referred to as "Mister". And that was in Chicago, not Birmingham. I was born twenty years later, into a Chicago were refusing to grant someone basic courtesy based on the color of their skin was considered unthinkable.

We've gone backwards since then; many no longer see meritocracy as the goal. But if there's more evil, there's at least less stupidity.

I think MLK would be critical of both sides of things. The kingdom of heaven is not on earth so we (all of us) can always improve.

It's like when Bill Cosby was convicted of rape. I was sad because Bill had been and advocate of improving of the family structure in African American communities. And I felt this would hurt that message. MLK became a martyr for his cause when he died. Would we be where we are at if MLK had not been killed? I don't think so.

I think if MLK was alive today he'd be 95 and still using whatever strength he had in him to continue doing God's work.

No, I don’t think so. He’d be very sad to learn about black men being stopped so often in their cars for small things and worse, ending up dead for whatever reason. Too many black men/women have been killed mysteriously, for no reason or for the wrong reason.

If he compared today's world and race relations compared to what it was in 1968, I think he'd be somewhat dismayed at the rise of racism especially in the GOP, but he'd be happy to see how far POCs have been recognized and are an active and important part of American culture.

What reasons would he have to be happy? Things are going backwards. Morons like DeSantis are trying to convince people that slavery was a GOOD thing because you learned skills you could use later in life - if ever you became a free human being.

"Happiness" is not only an overall sense of feeling content, but also the absence of fear. There's no way that's the case for POC in the world today, including the USA.
