Is psychology racist?

I'm studying and holy shit is it insensitive as fuck. Not to mention the gross history of the study, with many of the early psychologists being Germans and those Germans helped influence the Third Reich.

It's honestly fucked up how it's still so racist today. Like they only changed the wording, but still have fucked up beliefs about genetics and races/culture.

I think very few people deny that psychology has been plagued with racism since the start and it still exists today, with different wording.

psychology isn't racist. it’s just fact some races/genders are more prone to certain behavior, but it has to do less with uncontrollable factors and more on the culture they were raised in. for example, men and women are raised with very different standards, as are minorities and non-minorities.


if you can't separate highly-likely statistics from discrimination, psychology might not be for you.

The Third Reich, and its people.
Would you say that there was a culture of prejudice that led to the crimes that they committed?
Was this a stimuli that led to certain outcomes for that civilization (IE, its immediate rise and fall)

Interesting. The stanford piece talks about the lack of minority Editors in Chief and how there should be more diverse people in those positions. Does the field reflect minorities from which to draw them? I'm honestly asking, I don't know. It's like the Burlington VT newspaper has never had a black senior editor, but there's like 3 black people in town and they all have different jobs. If all the deviant psychologists are white then it's going to be hard to get a lot of black folk applying for the job. Now maybe I'm wrong and deviant psychologists are a represented cross section of the population, demographics wise. Sure. Early psychologist were massive racist and white supremacist and it’s still largely the same. Research is done by white for white people and there is a lot of prejudice against colored people.

Ok so you did no research on the psychology of living under a Nazi regime at all.

It was an experiment that measures how willing the average is to obey someone in a position of power even though they know what they have been ordered to do is wrong.

It was a neat experiment but the problem with it in relation to Nazis is that a lot of Nazis literally believed that what they were doing will save the world, even the average person. There were even efforts done by the individual citizens to force the Jews into the train car to bring them away. The average person actually believed that the Jewish population was the root of all their problems and would gladly see them suffer.
