Why are highly intelligent and profound people often mentally troubled or insane?

Because they're highly intelligent and profound.

Think of the stupidest person you know. No, the one whose beliefs you find most objectionable, or the one who's most easily manipulated, just the genuinely least intelligent. Give it some thought; it might not be who you expect at first, and it's almost certainly a person you don't really dislike.

Now imagine following this person around all day, listening to their stupid jokes and watching with increasing frustration as they struggle to grasp and apply ideas you'd've zipped past in infancy. By the end of one day, you'd be ready to never interact with them again.

Now multiply that across an entire lifetime. From EVERYONE.

And remember that even full-bore autists don't want to be completely alone, with no interaction at all; they just want less than most people, and under conditions they have more control over. The two impulses do NOT play nicely together.

Imagine you lived in a world where every problem had an obvious solution to you. Like literally to a point where you have to actively remember to be empathetic for people because their problems are so easy to fix to you. And not only are you the only one who can see it, and not only does nobody want to listen, and not only do they call you smart in the same breath, but they will literally come up with the most ridiculous reasons to not help themselves and go against whatever you're saying.

The they come to you to complain about their lives. So you need to accept that you can't help or relate with 90% of the people around you but you constantly watch them live their lives in varying states of insanity.

It takes a toll on you mentally. Especially if you don't develop a good mindset.

Also, a lot of people become smart because of trauma at a young age

"Often"? No. That's not at all true. Use some critical thinking based on your working knowledge of history, psychology, and mental healthcare. There are a few examples throughout history of people that fit your description. But that's all they are: a few examples, not a representative sample of an entire body of people.

I'm skeptical. Not only are we more likely to notice someone who is highly intelligent because they are outside the norm for that, but they are more likely to have interests and accomplishments that get our attention. It could also be that they aren't on the same wavelength when it comes to communication, and that is something that would definitely cause them to be misunderstood and mislabeled.

I don't think that's true. We simply notice them more when they are. There are plenty of rather ordinary people with serious mental problems, but we don't pay much attention. I also think this is something the less talented tell themselves to feel less envious.

People that are gifted intellectually think a lot beyond the normal and I think when you think too much it's inevitable you're going to start thinking some bs and slowly the mind beings to be filled with ish and causes them to become mentally ill.

Their brain works differently. With that comes pros and cons. If you are able to think at a deep level life becomes sad.

They’re brains work differently, so they’re often isolated socially and mentally because not many are on their level, but then called insane or mental because they’re different from the average person
