In absolute terms, yes, the USA is still number one. At least as measured in terms of the economy. In military terms, the USA is similarly number one insofar as its' technological prowess and combat capabilities are concerned. (It being added that, in terms of the numbers, the armed forces of the USA have never been number one. Here the metric is quality, not quantity.)
That said, it needs to be recognized that #1 is not a concrete definable thing, but it is rather a dynamic. For example, as alluded to above, the Russian and Chinese armed forces have always outnumbered the USA by simple virtue of the fact that their populations are larger. With larger populations, they have larger manpower pools and thus are able to be build numerically superior armed forces. The quality of their training and equipment generally not being the equal of the Americans.
By other standards, the USA has, in material terms, the highest standard of living. Reasonably low unemployment, low inflation by global standards, reasonable health care, low axes by global standards, etc.
Even here, this is offset by other realities. Americans prefer the tyranny of the streets to the tyranny of the government. Thus the law rests lightly on the society and the culture, with the net effect that by the standards of the West, the USA has viciously high crime rates, even in relatively stable periods.
The American welfare state is relatively small by Western standards - though as the American population ages, the portion of the state dedicated to the elderly is getting larger. After all, the elderly vote in higher numbers than most other demographic groups - the net effect being an overall high poverty rate by Western standards.
The list goes on. Add it all up, and the USA comes out reasonably well by global standards. However, global affairs are dynamic and the status quo is not assured. In terms of the West, the USA is apt to remain number 1 given the demographics, economics and population factors.
However, China and even Russia are now making a serious challenge to the USA in the international arena. Because they are dictatorships not accountable to their electorates, they have been able to dedicate a disproportionate share of their resources to their armed forces and thus challenge the USA.
See also the Chinese Navy which now outnumbers the USA's Navy as exhibit A. Given the USA's status as a maritime power and her use of maritime trade as well as need to be able to project her power across the oceans, this is an extremely serious development. Yet, the American public, preoccupied as it is with other domestic issues, will not divert resources to meet the challenge.
Similarly, the Chinese and Russians may more easily divert their nominally more limited resources to critical economic sectors - such as tech. This also presenting a grave danger to American preeminence.
Put it all together and yes, at the moment, by the numbers, the USA remains number one. However, it is a position that - not for the first time - is in peril. It remaining an open question if the American public will recognize that threat and begin to adopt policies to address it.
Our debt, prison population, and military spending are all number 1.
We make up other metrics that aren't objective to give ourselves the number 1 spot besides that, like calling ourselves the most exported culture, and active economy (so we can say the debt is positive)
USA is still number 1, but it is in great danger of becoming number 2 or even 3.
It is the largest "democracy" in the world, but so much of the judiciary is becoming politicised.
It is a lot better than China, North Korea, Russia. No country is perfect, but is is the best we have.
Probably more fire power then the whole of Europe. That is rapidly being overtaken by China.
India is considered the largest democracy in the world. In addition to being now the largest people in the world.
@blondfrog, “Democracy” isn’t what’s unique about America. Lots of countries are Democracies and have rights like: “freedom of speech”, even North Korea has a constitution with “free speech”. But none of them have them enshrined in a Constitution quite like the United States.
It’s very difficult to revise the Bill of Rights because of how the founding fathers set them up with multiple checks and balances. They are still being violated, but we can’t get a president into power who can just sign a bill unilaterally revoking anything in it, though some have tried, the 1st and 2nd amendments are violated daily- a symptom of Americas fall from grace.
@DarkWinterNights Right I was going to say.

Nope, this President election will be horrible.
Without question. But many factions of the world are much more united in thier cause to thwart that then ever before.
The United States without question led the way the last half of the 20th century in the global community. But our failed sanctions towards Russia over the invasion of Ukraine proves how little the global community is united anymore. China and Iran both seek to diminish the United States standing in the world. And they aren't against openly supporting Russia's bullying of Ukraine to do it.
War with Iran might be inevitable at this point. At least with China they're vastly invested with the United States. So war with the United States would be economical devastating for everyone.
Debatable, it’s no where near as good as it was a couple of decades ago. But the whole western world is having an existential crisis. So it’s a matter of personal perspective.
Still #1! USA, USA, USA!
https://www.youtube.com/embed/R3yJJ3fqfTYMcDonald's! Wal-Mart! The Gap! Baseball! NFL! The Alamo! America, fuck yeah! Freedom is the only way, yeah! Terrorists, your game is through, cause now you have to... America! Fuck yeah! So lick my butt and suck my balls, America!
I hope I didn't offend my American friends, but I think the US is still an amazing country. Having some issues right now. But still the world leader as I see it.
Olympic gold medals, Nobel prizes, innovations, cultural influence on the rest of the world. It's hard to beat the US.
For sure; I was thinking in terms of sheer numbers. And definitely I think some Americans could benefit from traveling the world a bit before claiming their country is the greatest on the planet. But I do think it's difficult to beat the influence that the US have on the world. If we look at tech, for example, so much that influences our daily lives was invented in the US: Internet, cars, airplanes, smartphones, microprocessors, etc.
I think we actually aren't so cutting-edge in tech here. Or could you explain why?
You guys have things we still don't have.
1. Those high end tech toilets that will do everything for you so that you won't even need toilet paper.
2. You guys have just about everything on a vending machine now.
3. You have sleeping pods in airports although UAE now has some of those as well.
4. I am sure there are other stuff I am missing. I am blanking out right now.
And you guys have everything we have including iPhone, Androids. Augmented reality technology, IOT, etc.
I see! We do definitely have some fancy toilets and vending machines and so forth! I'm not sure if the tech is so innovative though or simply very saturated here. It's kind of a cliche but I think most Japanese aren't innovators so much as refiners of existing tech. Japanese don't invent cars but they significantly optimize reliability and fuel efficiency, e. g. I think something about the US economy as well as the entrepreneurial mindset there tends to encourage the boldest and most ambitious innovations. It's difficult to find the Japanese equivalent of Silicon Valley, e. g.
Yep along with Toyota (including Lexus) and Nissan and Mazda and so forth. Although the invention of the automobile was still an American invention if I understood what you meant. I got a bit confused what suburbs meant in this context (admittedly I lack much expertise about cars).
I mean I do get what you mean when you say "they are more refiners of technology". Like they weren't to invent the first of anything. But you could argue that's how every piece of technology works. And the person who has refined it and makes it better though I still think should get credit. For instance the first telephone is nowhere near as good as the phones we use today. So the people who invented the smartphones or a better version of smart phone should still get that credit. Since it just has additional and better features.
I see and agree in large part, although I tend to measure it by risk to some degree. All innovations are built on the works of predecessors but there are relatively riskier and bolder vs. less risky and safer ones. An extremely bold and risky one is like trying to be the first to land on the moon where I heard that engineers even used duct tape to hold the interiors of the spacecraft together. It's relatively less risky after the initial pioneers successfully ventured the risk to start optimizing things like comfort and safety since we already have the working model and just seeking to make relatively smaller innovations to optimize it according to select criteria.
Yep! We had that much of a lead on the rest of the world that we can show the world what left wing nut jobs really want to do to the world for several years and still be on top even with all their destruction.
US hasn't been number 1 for at least 40 years. We lead the world in very few categories.
Only because the the only country that could challenge us have their own problems which are far worse still.
All the illegals 18 million wait till food riots
Murders
Terrorist cells
Good job Biden the absolute worst president of United States
Let applyed the dunbass
No.
I believe it has been overtaken in obesity by Mexico and a few Pacific Islands.
Its in some aspects, but in other aspects its on the middle places.
Nope not anymore. People are waking up and smelling the coffee, plus their economy is in shit shape. Plus look what they put in as Presidents (gibbering idiots).
Yes, but not for long if we elect Democrats.
It is still number 1 but 4 more years of Mr. Potato Head and we won't be.
Lol it’s finished. I’m so glad india and china will takeover. The west is over, your country is imploding in on itself and I’m loving every second of it
The American Dream has been brutally murdered by a bunch of morons who think they can defy the laws of economics and not cause massive amounts of suffering.
not where i live.
What we are is on the brink of civil war.
No, you are not. Fat people bitch and moan on the internet, they don't go out gunfighting in the streets. That would be over in 30 minutes.
@DryGermanGuy Sure, just like you German cucks who have allowed a Muslim invasion. Pathetic cowards.
I can't see any Muslim invasions here, no matter how hard I try. Our crime is also at an all-time low. Stop parroting Lara Trump and other fanatic sock puppets.
@DryGermanGuy Bullshit.
Feel free to travel around in my country and notify me of all the chaos, death and despair these Muslim invasions have caused. But guessing that you never have traveled to/in Europe, don't speak the language and would probably be fired if you really took a vacation worth its name... well.
@DryGermanGuy Just stop. You are lying through your teeth. If you did tell the truth in your cuck nation you would be arrested for "hate speech".
You mean like the convictions of Rudy Giuliani, Alex Jones and the highly professional news team of FOX? Hate speech in both our countries is defined very similar. By the way: We have 58.000 prisoners in Germany, the United States has 2,5 million. So don't babble to me about your great freedoms. Your country arrests and convicts people for the dumbest and pettiest reasons.
@DryGermanGuy blah blah blah... I will never understand why Europeans OBSESS about American politics. Get a fucking life. Manage your own shit.
An exchange about important events, politics and ideas has nothing to do with obsession. It's necessary because Europe and USA are interwoven by the same interests (trade, research, climate change...), same goals (e. g. helping democracy in Ukraine) and same organizations (e. g. NATO). Isolationism didn't work very well in the past and not at all today.
@DryGermanGuy It's an obsession. We don't give a fuck about you, we have our own lives and problems. Somehow Europeans feel compelled to binge on all things American. Quit feeding off of us and just fuck off.
So leave.
It was never number one.
In what?
You're about five times as likely to be murdered in the US as in the EU. Politically, 147 Republican lawmakers showed themselves willing to lie about an election in order to install their choice for president in 2020.
In Europe you basically can't be fired without cause, you get far more paid vacation, and you generally don't lose your health insurance if you lose your job. Medical bankruptcy is unheard-of.

I was going to post www.ruralhealthinfo.org/topics/violence-and-abuse and www.nola.com/.../...a6-11ed-86db-b7b123e7d8c0.html but the former is misleading in the statistics it chooses to quote (no large cities listed) and the latter doesn't give a source for their figure of 6 per 100,000 in rural areas. Regardless, rural areas in the US are more dangerous than all of the EU, including their big cities.
