Is it a societal thing? As a woman who is extremely risk adverse it shocks me at the insanely risky things men do sometimes. Women takes risks too of course but I’ve never seen it taken to the extent men will take it.

Men actually don't take more risks. Not in the sense you think at least. Men are more logical and rational so they will view a certain thing and what the possible risk involved in is. Then they will either attempt it or not. Men typically do not blindly run into bad situations. Take for example the whole going out late at night. Women do this a lot and get attacked more despite Men being at a higher likelihood of being attacked. Why? Simply put Men look at the situation and go "yeah that isn't worth the risk I can do it in the morning". Women don't do this. When you see a man voluntarily go outside late at night he has assessed the risks and decided that it is worth it. And you can tell off his behavior that he is paying attention even if it may not seem like it Immediately.
Men and women are different.
Why do men like building things and working with their hands?
Why do women often like working with people, kids?
Why do men always ask women out? Why do women often wait to be asked out or just send "hints"?
Why are men so visually enticed sexually? Why do women get so enticed by hearing things, reading erotic/romance novels and just imagining it in her head?
Why are men so enticed by sweet, pleasant, cute girls without caring at all about her "providing" anything but loving loyal companionship?
Why are women so enticed by a man who has a lot of things, who can do a lot of things and is confident and take charge?
MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. WE ARE HARD WIRED DIFFERENT.
Most obvious trigger would be to say it's the same reason bulls sharks are the most aggressive. They have the highest levels of testosterone.
Some of those high T men aren't willing to take chance... same as some woman are. So it is not all chemicals other things factor in.
It's human nature; men just take more risks. That's why they're more likely to have gambling addictions or get struck by lightning. Because why stop at 17 when the next card might get you to 21? And why stop fishing in a thunderstorm? Go big or go home lmao

I think part of it is because we're more biologically expendable as we cannot get pregnant. A tribe with few men and a bunch of women has a potential future (as with the case of a tribe where most of the men lost their lives fighting a battle to protect the tribe). A tribe with few women and a bunch of men has little chance of a future.
So I think we're evolved to take more risks. Cultures follow and reinforce this concept but I think there's an underlying biological reason behind the cultures.
Because it makes me feel alive.
I think John Wayne put it best, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway”. I conquer the risk not because I’m fearless but because I can see past it and envision myself growing into a stronger man.
It takes a calculated evaluation of one’s own limitations and immense self control to straddle that fine line between life and death. Something we in the aviation community call “flying on the gnats ass” or “pushing the envelope”. And after it’s all done, sometimes I’m scared shitless, but im ready to do it again.

It's in the male genes. Back in caveman days, Mother Nature asked women with bearing children, and taking care of them, while men were tasked with hunting for food. Hunting wild animals is risky, and the male genes and testosterone are what encourages men to take risks... when needed.
It's the results, that are yielded from taking risks because said results do not come risk free.
It also depends what kind of risk it is.
For instance - I'm not gonna break my back mining things for measly pay just to give it all to a woman and the kids (the woman might not even love me anymore or cheats on me). Or work on construction on a scaffold, that looks unstable - also for measly pay.
Getting rich at the risk of it not working out, losing the investment or somebody finding out, that shouldn't? Now that's more like it.
It's just our instinct. Taking more risks means usually a greater reward, which helps our survival or our family's survival.
Take it to the most basic thing: food. You take more risk, hunt a bigger animal, get more food, you and your offspring thrive more.
Now you can transpose it to any situation in life, even modern times. Job? Take a bigger risk, get a bigger pay, you're thriving. Love? You get a better girl.
Most of our behaviors are rooted in our primal instinct, men or women. And we'll always come back to it, no matter how hard we're trying to escape it, especially now.
It's evolutionary. Our brain developed to look for solutions to survive so we explore, adventure, try things, etc. to develop our society and since men don't have the power to give birth, they're the one who have to be put in front of everything because their life is less valuable than women's. A ratio of more men than women would give humanity a harder time to repopulate because women can only give birth for a few times in her life while a man can impregate hundreds of women in a short amount of time. So that is why if society has more women, it's easier for humanity to strive. So that is why men are the ones who have to take risks and die.
Testosterone and adrenaline rush.

Young boys run around playing war games with their friends, build forts, climb things and test their abilities.
Then there are sports, especially rough stuff like football. Sports are like war.
Men are built to be tough, have courage and take risks, and society encourages that. Society needs strong men and heterosexual women adore them.
I mean, it doesn’t have to be chemical. Most men are conditioned to it.. hell, we had to pursue women.. at the risk of getting laughed out or horribly rejected.. women are not subject to it because society mostly hands a woman a lot… not necessarily a terrible thing, this is just how it works..
Should it change, I think so. You would have less entitled women in the western culture. But that’s mainly it. We have to take risk or we don’t get things handed to us.. it’s usually homelessness and poverty. Whereas women don’t and can have an amazing life being taken care of.
I think it's because in general men are less judged for their actions, so they feel free to do whatever they want. And I think it's also because some men believe they're invincible. They truly believe that nothing bad happens to them.
It is just the nature of men to take more risks than women. It always has been. Men had to take risks histrically to survive and to protect and provide for their loved ones. Men who were risk adverse tended to not live long enough to pass on their genes.
because evolionarily speaking, men are the dispensable parent that will fight the saber tooth tiger even though they got no chance to win, just to give their offspring a better chance to survive. i know there's no saber tooth tigers anymore but evolution is slow.

Simply, one man and ten women can have ten children or so in a year. One woman and ten men can have one. Thousands of years of reinforcement of this type has made it cultural.
No it's both a cultural and a genetic thing. It's cultural to the extent that we live in a violent culture and the United States has an exceedingly violent culture. It is also genetic in that men were created larger and stronger than women in order to engage in violence during hunting and also to engage in hard work in terms of raising crops. Agriculture, particularly agriculture performed without the aid of machinery is exceedingly hard work.
@msc545. Have you ever seen the "Dangerous book for Boys"? It talks about how boys need to do things like climb trees, roughhouse, make things, and take risks. Getting hurt is a part of being a boy (or human really), and boys learn their own limitations and gain confidence by DOING, unlike women who get confidence from their friend group and attention they receive.

It's probably partly testosterone or other biological factors, but it's definitely partly societal too. Boys from a young age are often encouraged to take risks. Girls are often discouraged.

You are also forgetting that a man is the one impregating you. And in order for a man to be able to impregate a woman, he has to show his value and how much he has accomplished to be able to raise a family.

Well nobody is forcing you to actually get pregnant right now. But if you choose to and not let your husband do anything then that's still also your choice and you can only speak for yourself because they're also other women who chose to not get pregnant while letting their husband still do all the dirty work.
