Would you consider Billy Tipton transgender?

Her Wikipedia page consistently refers to her as "HIM" and states that she was transgender, but she never had sexual reassignment surgery of suffered from gender dysmorphia. She lived life as a man because she wanted to be a jazz musician and back then America Number 1 was a backwards sexist society and women weren't allowed to be musicians. This kind of stuff happened in many cultures. The only thing I think she took too far was having relationships with women who believed she was a man.

Korla Pandit was actually a black man named John Roland Redd who posed as an Indian, because America Number 1 didn't allow black people to be musicians, but no one is referring to him as an "Indian man" or "transracial", in the same way they're doing to Billy Tipton.

If someone pretends to be the opposite sex for work, that's one thing. If they live as the opposite sex in their whole lifestyle, including their love life, well... let's just say that's a more serious indicator. Even some women who pretended to be men to be pirates, in their intimate relationships they were still women.

But cultures change over time and across space, and no two people really view their gender in exactly the same way. Even cis people have unique ways and reasons they view themselves personally as their gender. So I wouldn't call anyone trans who didn't themselves say they are trans. I would say there's similarities between experiences though, and many trans people can probably relate to Tipton.
