What do you think of the "TikTok" Ban?

I think its not really a ban. I have read the bill that passed the senate. TikTok has been given 9 months to find a US Buyer, or they can no longer form contracts in the US. What this means is, if a US Company doesn't buy TikTok, Places like the play store, and the apple app store will not be able to carry the app. You'd still be able to download it from the web site, you'd still be able to use the web site, And they would have to find hosting outside of the country, but it would not actually be banned. Additionally there are provisions in the bill where they can take it to court to see if said ban is illegal, Which if it makes it to the supreme court, we can all guess how that's going to go.

In my opinion though, I am definitely all for a US company buying it, if for no other reason it would assist in killing Chinese propaganda and anti us propaganda. But what a lot of idiot leftists dont understand is that the bill does not effectively ban TikTok, it just makes it so American companies can no longer contract with it.

If an American company owns it and hosts it on US soil then America can legislate what content is "acceptable" for the delicate sensibilities of the US population.

Unfortunately, it starts to become fucked up WAY faster than you'll expect. Legislation against "hate speech" will become a requirement for "compelled speech". How long before the law that starts by banning Tiktok wants to edit the Bible because it has the temerity to list moral and spiritual absolutes that the government of the day disapproves of?

Think I'm exaggerating? South Africa just amended their law to compel parents and teachers to teach "gender ideology" at kindergarten level. Interesting. I didn’t know all that. I’m not a big TikTok fan so it really doesn’t change my opinion, which is that if it’s genuinely a matter of national security I can totally understand why they’re doing it. It does set a dangerous precedent though, and I think it should be narrowly interpreted so as not to give the government the power to ban any app it feels like.

There is a great video by Ryan McBeth about how TikTok is a Chinese cyber weapon. He makes a great case for how TikTok is aimed at the loudest but least informed sector (young woke women), and how they can be manipulated and mobilised quickly.

That guy's video is why I support the ban. That and seeing the effects of tictok on young girls.. For example girls developing touretts ticks after watching touretts videos.. Or women partnershaming their husbands and then seeing women screaming for divorce.. Tictok effects women worse than men..

I think the ban is ridiculous honestly, about so-called "security reasons" because of China. Meanwhile Chinese people coming through the border are the largest group of immigrants into the U. S. right now, and Congress isn't in a hurry to change that.

I would rather see OnlyFans be banned than TikTok. At least on TikTok you have people trying to run or advertise their business there. OF makes it possible for just any regular woman to make money being sleazy.

Whether the bill is an actual ban or not, it's an attempt to control social media content.

Our government and corporate media, including social media giants, all collaborate and are in agreement about which thoughts to censor and which ones to push in people's faces. Their propaganda is "truth", and any other thoughts are considered "dangerous".

Did you read the content of my question though? It's not really a ban. It's them saying "either find a company to buy you, or you can't make contracts in the US.." meaning it's not banned, it's ability to make money will be curtailed though. And it's a foreign owned company. What part of that is about controlling free speech?

Are you okay with a Chinese company pushing things that are anti American? Or worse yet, how would you feel if Chinese companies just started buying up American property and businesses?

I did read it, it just makes no difference. Sure they aren't banning it, they're just forcing TikTok to sell their company to someone that they themselves can control. Just like meta, which of course most government officials are also a heavily invested in. Have you ever actually used TikTok for a couple of months to see how it actually works? Chinese companies buying American property is irrelevant to this argument, because tiktok is a service, not a physical commodity like land. And besides that, The Chinese are already able to buy American property. Where is the government in stopping that? Nowhere in sight, likely because they are also profiting from it. But again, that is irrelevant to this argument. Watching the tiktok hearing made me realize that even most Republicans there are just tools who are trying to bump their stocks, and foolish ones who sound like they barely know how to run a computer, at that.
