There's several problems, obviously, but I think one is that the quality and content varies so drastically by location. In some schools you will be taught directly opposing things than you will be taught in other schools. Is some schools you will learn whole new subjects that are never even mentioned in other schools.

For example I was taught about the big bang and evolution theories in school, and my husband was taught the Christian story of a 6-day creation (as literal fact) in school. I was not taught any sex ed in school, and he was taught that sex before marriage is a sin in school and nothing else about sex.

I came to America with an education three years ahead of the peers there. Was corrected for European word differences. My sister faired better being four years older, more elastic and solid in her learning, but I was in the tender age that caused massive confusion. Being told something that was right and correct was wrong due to cold ignorance. Then there is the lack of world issues being taught, and so many subjects repeated over and over and over.. and often incorrect. I could go on.

I used to volunteer to go to our state education dept to help steer testing and curriculum. I gave up. It was useless and disheartening. I'm glad I switched to AP and special Ed classes. I felt like I was making a difference. The great middle of kids are getting a one size fits all when clearly it doesn't.

a lot of school are discontinuing their gifted and talented programs so no one feels "left out" If I was a parent in that district they would need a police presence and a straitjacket for me at the board of Ed meeting.

I have step kids, (boy and girl) in the same school, and the girls is a great success, and excels in everything she does or attempts. The boy, has NEVER had any encouragement from his useless biological father, and has been an abject failure and was expelled and failed to graduate from school for shooting another kind with a paint gun out the window of the car.

Two kids, one a success, the other an abject failure... you tell me what is the fault of the educational system? In this case, the student (boy) apparently had no motivation to succeed. - Not because of the system, but from his biological parents.

@handsomelad70 You are right, but fortunately, the biological father had no firearms in the house., but to think of this 16 year old kid actually 'shooting' another kid out the window of a car with a paint gun has some horrifying resemblance to what goes on daily here almost daily.

Let me put it this way. According to the U. S. Mis-education Department, fully half of Americans function at a sixth-grade level, meaning that of a 10-11- or 12-year-old. (As a gifted child, I was a 10-year-old sixth-grader.) That disturbing statistic is due to a half-century (maybe longer) of underfunding education, a society's most important function as education prepares the next generation of citizens, or turning education over to religious fanatics and/or reactionaries whose goal is indoctrinating, not educating youngsters. A scary situation with today's looming threats to democracy.
