Do you like the UK prime ministers plan to reintroduce National Service?

Question

Yesterday, Britain woke to the news that if the Conservatives (right) win the election, they'll reintroduce national service for 18 year olds. Some other European countries have national service, and as war with Russia looms, there's a need for cannon fodder.

Critics point out that it's already too difficult to get in the military and the army shouldn't be lumbered with reluctant recruits. While proponents think it'll help the young man the fuck up and stop identifying as squirrels.

What's your opinion?

This was covered with NATO, it’s going to happen, all major parties know it’s coming.

How effective it would be, pass. However you want to live in the country then 2 years military service please.

when someone in the MoD says absolutely not, then you know they really mean, well actually we do plan to do it.

We have a large number of single males getting on boats crossing the channel, we can use them around the globe.

Oh and we are working very closely with Sweden and Finland, a lot of cross training and processes being used.

It may be like Frances Universal conscription but in next 5 years it will be in place no matter who wins.

The alternative is to pay lower ranks in all 3 services a better wage and better living conditions, that will improve on those applying.

Also we have not had a war with France for bloody ages.

Not really. National service just undermines the quality of the army by spending resources on people that does not have the motivation or ability. The UK is under no real threats currently so they benefit the most from a professional military (as in being in the military being a voluntary choice and professional career) for the highest quality at the lowest cost

As for Russia, it has never been less of a threat really. More specifically Russia is being systematically destroyed in Ukraine so they simply do not have the capability to attack anyone else in the next like 30-50 years.

My friend said that technology has changed our life style and maturation rate and a lot of 24 year old adults have the emotional maturity of 10 year old children. As an adult, I view 18 year old kids as only slightly more mature than 3 year old toddlers. I think it's hypocritical to expect them to fight on the country's behalf while the country sits at home eating potato chips and watching football on t. v. and not caring about anything other than what type of sauce used in their pasta.

Double standards are what drove all the slave owners in the 1800's. The belief its okay for others to suffer for you when you do not suffer equally or partially for those who suffer for you.

From what I understand of UK politics, it's likely the Conservatives will lose the election and Sunak will be out of a job, so this won't happen. Even if they somehow manage to win, it's unlikely they will have enough support to put this in place.

Having said all that, it's a bad idea. AFIK, only Israel and the Mormon Church have compulsory service.

I don't really believe he is running a serous campaign to stay in power.

The British "Conservative" party has been anything but in refusing to deal with immigration, trade, leftist abuse their institutions, etc.. All despite having all the power to do so. Their leadership clearly has a lack of will.

That said if you believe war is coming you need a while to train an army large enough to fight it, that will take a long time. I for one can't see war in Europe on its way given how exhausted and ineffective Russia was in Ukraine.

What needs to be done is a close examination of your military technology and tactics before you try to build a new army.

100% yes. It doesn’t mean just military service. This could be any critical service to your nation: highway maintenance, nursing & elderly care, woodland firefighting, graffiti removal, animal shelters, beach cleanup, and of course non-combat military roles.

I was very surprised he did it to be honest. I think he is purposely trying to lose the General Election and he won't be winning any young votes. There were other policies he should have announced, this was the last thing i expected him to do.

It is rather baffling that he did that.

These troops can be trained reserves which will be good for them and the country. Confidence, pride, a discipline does not bend easily, and exactly your point of man the fuck up, no squirrels.

The pool of fuckable guys will get much larger within just one year or two.

It's a bit too late for me. There's nothing inherently wrong with national service as a policy, but introducing the idea within weeks of a general election in the hopes of getting a few extra votes just seems stupid. It's not even a popular policy.

I think they are talking about introducing charity and voluntary work rather than military. They had programmes in the past along these lines. I'm not sure people would stand for military conscription in these times in the UK.
