It'd almost certainly be something Germanic, since that's what English is; basically, German, Old Norse, and the Celtic tongue of the British (no, not the English; the people who were there before the English arrived) all mixed together, with a solid helping of Latin, to make sure things are EXTRA confusing.

This is why, if you listen to an audiobook of Beowulf in the original Old English, it sounds like a cross between German and the dialogue of the Swedish Chef on the Muppet Show.
