Should we have enacted laws against pressure cookers because of the Boston Marathon bombing? Or is there an understanding that the problem isn't tools, it's PEOPLE.

Trump is a former president and a leading candidate for the presidency, His team has been asking for more security for over a year, and the requests have been made many times more recently as the campaign is getting underway. And yet, not only was he only given the most minimal security, but it's been reported that the counter-sniper team was only given approval the night before the rally - a rally that's been planned for months. 24 hours is insufficient to plan and survey the sight properly, and 1 team is no where near enough to secure such an area.

It's also been reported (and this is actually standard practice) that the local police, who were there to provide security, were NOT allowed to be armed. And in fact, while a policeman did climb up the ladder to the roof to investigate reports of a shooter on the roof, he was forced to retreat when the gunman aimed at him. And being unarmed, there's little he could do. This is why a larger Secret Service team is necessary - if local police can't be armed, then there needs to be enough of a team who can be.

Another big issue is that, unsurprisingly, the local police did not have a direct way to contact the Secret Service, so their warning could not get to where it needed to go without a liaison to pass on the information, which wastes critical time.

How is it that there were unsecured ladders up to the roof (these are permanently-installed ladders attached to the building)? That's a huge security threat - there should have been police guarding every roof access.

As others have mentioned, this kid had been bullied relentlessly for years. But schools have uniformly failed to address bullying for decades, even when it occurs right in front of their faces. And the second a bullied kid fights back, the school will THEN jump in and punish the victim (the person bullied, NOT the bully!). Teacher's Unions and other school authorities refuse to even discuss addressing these problems - ever.

Oh, we should also mention here that Democrats tried to pass a law that would have stripped ALL Secret Service protection from Trump. That was only 4 months ago, and they came close, but couldn't quite get the votes they needed.

So, the lesson here is that it doesn't matter what laws are in place when laws are poorly enforced, selectively enforced, or not enforced at all. And that's why you aren't going to get any support for more gun control - that will only be used against law-abiding people while criminals and killers will be ignored by police, and let go without prosecution by prosecutors, whenever they can get away with it.

Criminals will always have guns. Always.

There are over 80,000 federal and state gun laws and regulations on the books now.

You can take away all the guns, and criminals will still have them. Those who don't use guns will find other ways to kill. You can never stop it no matter what you do. So stop spewing your hatred and filth on us for wanting to protect our rights and our safety and our lives.

The reason for the shooting was not guns. It was because the shooter was relentlessly bullied during high school. This is the most common reason for mass shootings, and it is the reason for this one.

But no one ever pays attention to that. They only pay attention to the guns. They don't care about the bullied kid, or other bullied kids who are out there right now, fomenting plans for their future ravages on our society.

We don't care that no one likes them, no one becomes friends with them, no one spends time with them. Including their always bewildered parents.

If you want to stop school shootings, mall shootings, mass shootings of any kind, and shootings like yesterday, take care of people who need it. Stop bullying them and don't ignore their cries for help.

If you're not able to help them yourself, and many people are not, then get help for them.

But no, it's not about the guns, and it's not about the gun laws. It's about the people.

I agree with you about the bullying, most of these bullied kids who go on to become shooters usually have Autism

There have been way too many guns in America 🇺🇸 for too many decades. They are everywhere!

There's nothing we can do about it now.

Year's ago I think it was the police departments that if you turned your gun (s) in to them, they would give you money for them.
A lot of people liked that idea.

@Jersey2 People who are always getting on a soap box about gun control have no idea what specific gun control measures "should" be implemented and no clue about how any specific gun control law would have prevented the most recent tragedy. It seems to be a Pavlovian response with them.

No, liberty matters more. We don't even know if this was due to accelerationist evolvement for example. I saw in some articles an AR-15 was used which is the accelerationist weapon of choice, its very possible someone talked the shooter into it. And those people do that to try and cause guns to be banned and stir up division.

Meanwhile if we take that out of it republicans and conservatives are strongly self defense, this will not deter them at all. They are however rightfully demanding better protection of Trump and asking why the secret service didn't act adequately to the shooter being on the roof. Entire incident could have been prevented since the shooter was spotted 2 minutes early, if they had rushed trump out at that time right as the signal was done out of caution we would be having a different discussion and the shooter would not be dead but investigated and in jail.

this guy didn’t set up a lemonade stand with no permit, he attempted to assassinate the president he was ready to die.

    what would have stopped this?

Even if they do, SCOTUS will overturn them, like the bump stock ban that Trump signed. Of course Biden could order the justices shot, as chief executive, then pardon the shooters. That's what SCOTUS says.

What gun law specifically would have stopped this shooting and would it have been worth having all of our civil liberties quickly stripped from us after the government has no opposition? Let me show you what happened to Australia after they were disarmed.

We don't need more gun laws. We need to enforce the existing laws more. The father did not secure his AR and contributed both crimes by not doing so.

No, for the same reason people don't ban cars or restrict cars based on idiot drunk drivers. Except gun rights in the US are a Constitutional right and driving isn't... so it's even less sensible to ban guns than it would be to ban cars.

No, if they don’t after school shooting then why after a rally shooting? We believe in the right to bare arms no matter what. We need stricter checks of the people getting guns…. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people…. That is why guns aren’t put in prison for murder, people are….
