Decline of living standards and constantly having to choose between 'Heating and Eating'; that's how life is for millions of people in the UK, also working people.
(I cannot complain financially despite being on disability benefits; I live a very frugal life and keep my bill load is low as possible. I don't have car, can't even drive, so I save hundreds of Pounds every month compared to many other people... but I am constantly afraid that my benefits will be taken away and I will end up starving again. The British government has once again opened a war on disabled people)
On top of that option no 1 too, the mentally stressful jobs. I don't mind stressful jobs, I have been a chef for 22 years and the busier it is the more I feel in my element. But there is a limit to how much I can do, 60-70 hour work weeks are not normal; finishing at 11 o' clock in the evening and having to wake up at 4 in the morning again for a breakfast shift. The constant targets at jobs to force employments to reach unreasonable targets putting extra stress and exhaustion on those workers. As if working 60-70 hours a week wasn't enough, I did most of the work alone... no extra staff to help me. And the ridiculous amount of paperwork which needs to be filled in because people assume it'll improve the standards in professional kitchens also ruined the job.
And all that at bloody f***** minimum income
I am done with being a Chef, they'll never get me back into professional kitchen!
Where do we start?
First of all - all of the above.
Add the following to the mix
And it's no wonder that depression is sky high
Right now, Canada is facing major job losses and high inflations/cost of living. With that is a lot of financial hardships. I know a friend who’s been out of work for a year. The fortunate thing is he lives in community housing and rent is based on income. No income means no rent. He’s currently on unemployment insurance which has been helping him stay afloat but he says once he’s maxed that out, and he doesn’t find newer employment, he’ll have to apply for Ontario works (welfare) the pay isn’t much but it puts food on the table. I can see the stress eating at him slowly as he’s so used to working and being off for a year is definitely crippling his mental health. He’s qualified for a lot of the places he’s applied for. The issue being the rise of immigrants in Canada and management hiring their own.
There’s a lot of under the table work happening and a lot of companies would rather hire someone and pay them less rather than paying someone qualified their worth. A lot of people currently are complaining about Indians coming on ‘student visas’ and pretty much not going to school but over-saturating the job markets. It’s a common theme and sorry for a lot of Canadians currently.
Modern technology is a big cause these days as it teaches people to be shut down as autistics are. Locked into their devices.
Example with this site's SO system which applauds autistic style writing, everyone who rambles long reels of text have 70% + mho.
Both affect people mentally.
Naturally people don't want to be lectured, they want to interact, give and take speech, hear and be heard, touch.
Moving on to lack of social skills and morals provided during younger years. Large chunks of people haven't been taught the meaning of respect or simply the word "no" for decades. They grow to find the world won't revolve around them like "mommy" and daddy did. They have no idea how to adapt. It's a shock and isolating. People lose their minds.
My theory to how numbers are on the rise anyway.
Early stages of migraines cause rambling..

I think it's the lack of being able to have a family member committed like it used to be. I read an article about the number of mental patients in mid 50s compared to today. It's been several years so I don't remember the numbers. But it was a drastic difference with a much higher percentage of the population having been under a doctors care in the 50s. I think that's a big part that make up the left. With a group that imposes, or tries to impose their will upon others calling themselves antifa. For anti fascists. Street militia, and everything else. It's crazy.
None of the above. Two biggest things I think are a lack of appreciation/ ingratitude, and lack of purpose.
1.) We live in one of, if not the, greatest countries on planet earth. For the first time in human history the biggest killer for Americans is over abundance (obesity) rather than privation. We don’t lose our children to disease, famine, or war. We live in one of the safest societies ever created and have no inkling how others have lived both in the past and in the majority of the world today. Ingratitude leads to perseverating on self and mental illness.
2.) Lack of purpose. People are rudderless. They don’t know why they’re here or where they’re going. The loss of religiosity and surplus options have less to choice overload. Autonomy is good, but it’s not the natural state of man. This also leads to mental illness, anxiety for example.
All of the above under capitalism. It's all socioeconomics. People used to have accessible third places (the first is home, the second is school or work, and the third is to have fun, live life, and find love) to go to. That's all been eroded by the profit motive of larger and more distant companies.
Americans are fed a steady diet of BS. they are conditioned since birth to believe that they need to spend money they don't have to buy crap they don't need.
This puts a lot of stress on people/ . Instead of finding pleasure in activities and human interaction people use shopping as a social event.
I would have to go with "Lack of Relationships" (and arguably fuse that with Loneliness). Sure, economic times ARE bad now (your three other reasons), but during the last Great Stagflation (1970s), and of course past recessions going back to the Great Depression (1930s), at least people had relationships that were at least understandable. We now have gone utterly off the rails in that respect.
capitalism, as in consumerism...
not only "everything" is going to stress the hell out of you but also... access to proper mental healthcare will be walled behind a very highly economic cost to even consider it
Devoting our lives to a job when we weren’t designed to be working more than enjoying our time on this earth with people with love and value (including time to ourselves)
In usa America ALL OF THE ABOVE. USA is what occurs if corruption and capitalism run wild. Its a fallen society with no future and too wedded to the past glories. Its a violent insular bigoted hubristic obese conspiracist faith-driven corrupt misogynistic racist suicide pact.
Probably the fact that no one can literally and metaphorically afford to live the 'American dream' that was promised decades ago to the older generations.
Being a largely rural country a lot of older people find themselves increasingly isolated as friends move away and their circles break up. It's not unusual uo find people who've not talked to anyone face to face for ages
Lol the Welsh should be happier than that 👀📺🫡😄 there's television
In ''America'' - consumerism.
In my original country - imitating ''America''
In my hosting country - Buddhism
Lack of meaningful relationships. Too many people live online and don't have people they interact with face-to-face on a deeper level than work.
When we look at the profiles of mass shooters and mass killers, they all seem to be loners
Yeah, but that's extreme cases.
I suggest this video:
In America the biggest contributor to the loss of mental health is the Democrat party. If you look at the people who belong to it I think it's pretty obvious.
Social media. Everywhere we look, we see people who are seemingly more happy or more successfully than we are. I am old enough to remember the pre-2010 era when although we knew successful happy people, their success and happiness was not constantly thrown in our faces. This makes us feel bad.
Aluminum and other toxic elements like fluoride in the body.
Other - the people who design the modern world, registered political lobbyists lol 😐☺️☺️☺️😐🫡
Actually, a combination of the first five, with financials struggles being the most conducive to mental health issues.
Latino/Hispanics don't care about mental health. Just take up another job!
