Why do they say to never forget 9/11 when they do a pretty damn good job of making sure we never forgot in the first place?

Im not meaning it as mean, I just think it’s pretty hard to forget when everyone remembers it all who was alive back then

As a HS history teacher it was my job every year to teach NY kids about 9/11 when they weren't even born yet. I TRULY struggled with that as I was a primary source as we're their parents and families. I usually just circled up the desks (after having these kids only a few days & didn't know all their names yet) and asked them what they knew and what questions they had. Then we talked. We shared. Sometimes we cried.

I then gave them a HW assignment (if their parents were able to discuss 9/11 and hadn't suffered any losses - our school did a FANTASTIC job of flagging kids who were impacted). The HW was to read the 2 pages of the textbook narrative of 9/11 and ask their parents to read it too and discuss if that's how they remember it. HOLY FUCK!!! It was a real eye-opener for the community - and we had some significant losses. One FDNY father called up the superintendent LIVID that he's paying for textbooks that, while accurate, failed to convey the emotional impact of the event and how the world truly changed afterwards. It's still an open wound here in NY. I guess it always will be...

It’s possible they meant it as a generational thing. After all who were there died and it becomes history it should be a notable part of North American history and something to always learn from and move on about with that in consideration type of deal. Not just understanding but also knowing how we recovered resiliently from that. The volunteers. The ability to adapt. The march and continuance forward in life and progress.

New Yorkers today are still hard workers and wise because of this. New York did not become some slum land or place to avoid in the world. Wall Street and everything. It’s all there. The depression didn’t stop them and the terrorist attack didn’t stop them. It’s the city that never sleeps and it’s the people that keep striving forward no matter what. No matter what kind of adversity or crime they may be faced with. 👍 💯

Well people who didn't live through it won't know about it. And people who know about it might not forget as such but it will go further back in the mind if it's a bystander awareness of it and someone immediately effected by it in person. So I guess the never forget is a way of keeping conversation alive. Keep the people who don't know asking "oh what was that" of the people who do remember it.

Here in UK we have Remembrance day with slogan never forget. And it's about the world war 2. And so you could argue how would anyone forget? The soldiers and their families. The old people now who were evacuated as children and sent to boarding schools. No they won't forget. But the rest of us would have.

Remember 9/11 isn’t meant to be taken as literal instructions. It’s symbolic and meant to honor the memory of those who died that day.
