Anger and fear are the easiest emotions to manipulate people with. They already did fear with Bush so republicans needed to switch it up.

Right wing media figured out that angry people can't think about things objectively. Get a dog mad enough and it will bite the hand that feeds it. Comfortable, organized people who require their leaders represent their collective interests and reward those leaders who do would be the swift and permanent doom of scammers who are only in it for themselves. So, right wing leaders must avoid an organized people at all costs. Keeping them too mad to think straight is merely the most cost effective way to accomplish that.
