The stereotype is that men are better drivers than we women are. If this is the case, then why are men (especially young men's) insurance rates higher? I know I have asked a question that will probably get a varied amount of responses. They say there is some truth in stereotypes. Is there any truth that men are better drivers than we are?
Anonymous(45 Plus)1 yWithout question.
Why do men men have higher insurance? Because men are more aggressive drivers, drive faster and because of it. Get into accidents with major injuries. And thar is the greater expense of car accidents. One that cause severe bodily harm.
I'll give you an example I had 3 women hit my (parked car😆) all in one year. This wasn't them speeding or driving reckless. But they were all negligent.
So even if you don't agree with my opinion I think I've earned the right to it.

1 yAccording to a quick internet search. young men pay way more for car insurance than young women, men in their 40's pay slightly less than woman in their 40's, and men who are 50+ pay slightly more than women who are 50+.
Men are generally acknowledged to have better spatial reasoning than women, but also tend to be more aggressive. So the one trait would make them better drivers, while the other trait would make them more likely to get into accidents.

My wife was a horrible driver until I had to literally teach her to drive better when she was freaking out because I would not let her drive my cars early on when we were dating. Stereotypical Asian woman driver, she could not parallel park at 18 when she got her license at 17. I don't know how you get your license when you can't drive right, but that's the city.12 Reply- 9.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.

1 yYes, but it's complicated. Here are the basic stats:
Men cause more fatal accidents due to speeding/chasing adrenaline and road rage.
But women cause a (slightly) disproportionate amount of accidents per female driver.
What I've actually experienced as a driver:
I've never been in an accident, but I've had some close shaves.
I've almost been hit four times by male drivers.- First, in heavy traffic by someone hauling a long trailer. I avoided the accident by going into the emergency lane and slowing down until I could get back into a lane.
- Second, a road raging old man driving a van (tried to pit maneuver me). I avoided the accident by slowing down and (when he tried again) just speeding off in the fast lane and then going the speed limit once he was gapped.
- Third, a teenager speeding in a black Honda Accord who did not know his car well. I avoided the accident by braking and increasing the size of the gap he took between me and the car in front.
- Fourth, a man who was high on weed almost side swiped me when his lane was merging into mine and he tried last second the pass, squeezing my car between his SUV and big truck. I avoided the accident by braking and slowing down.
I've almost been hit 18 times by female drivers:
- First, I've been nearly T-boned probably 15 times at one intersection in a parking lot where females regularly speed through a certain stop sign. I don't know why, but the guys stop at that stop sign every time and the females almost never do. I avoided these accidents speeding up so I spent less time in the intersection.
- Second, a woman who just really wanted to cause an accident. I was a few cars behind a midsize SUV when I saw her serve and drive another car completely off the highway. She then brake checked a semi, and then drove another truck off the highway. At the time, I had a fast and cheap (unusual combination, I know) car with a ram/bumper on the front. I caught up to her and memorized the car's make/model/color and license plate. She went for me next and tried brake checking, fully stopping on the highway, side swiping, etc etc. I called the state police and gave them all her information, our location, and the direction we were heading. Ten minutes later, state troopers pulled her over. I avoided the accident (s) by just by varying my speed and being a good driver.
- Third, a woman road raging (I have no idea why, I was literally parked at a stoplight when she pulled up next to me) kept brake checking me and trying to side swipe me etc etc. I avoided the accident by evading her car for a few minutes, and then sped off as she chased me. After maybe 5 minutes two other cars saw what was happening and blocked her after I passed them.
- Fourth, another woman who was road raging and cutting everyone off. I avoided the accident by swerving out of her way right before she rear ended me, and slowing down.
00 Reply548 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. while most women suck at driving (i am a woman, i drive decently to be honest, but when i see other women drive i'm incredibly baffled at some of the dumb things they do...), guys can act on impulse and speed and in general make the roads more unsafe.
men tend to show more aggressive behaviors and road rage when driving, more likely to tailgate, honk aggressively, make rude gestures, etc.
of course women still experience road rage, but they are less likely to actually act on it in a confrontational manner.

1 yMen are definitely better drivers than women. We generally have better motor skills and better spatial awareness, which translates to being better drivers. The reason our insurance rates are higher is not because we're worse drivers. It's because we're more AGGRESSIVE drivers.
If you're talking about who is less likely to get into accidents, then the answer is women. Men represent 71% of casualties, while women represent 29%.
But answer this... how many women are out there racing on the streets like the idiot young guys out there? It's the traits of the gender that translate to risk aversion on the road.20 Reply
1 yNope 👎🏻
Because of men being reckless and not care about getting into car accidents doesn’t make them any better than women. I’m a school bus driver and a woman. We have more women as drivers than men. I’ve seen both men and women equally getting into just as much accidents as anyone else. No gender is better than the other with cars.21 Reply- 1 y
Awe man!!! You made me remember my old school bus driver Sheila. I LOVED HER. She was a dream mom. She was so cool in my eyes. Once a fight broke out and she broke it up and yelled a guy taller than her and said he could walk if he didn’t cut that out and all and wouldn’t ride her bus again or something like that, and he calmed down! And I just had so much respect for her. She was a tough cookie but sweet too. I never met such a sweet driver. I’ve rode grey hound before and it was always eh. I even had another school bus driver other than Sheila and he was quite strange! A little scary too.
I always felt safe with Sheila. She drove swell. I’d be half asleep in the morning or falling asleep in the afternoon and I’d always trust her at the wheel. She knew the roads and all. I hope she’s okay. Thanks for the flood of wholesome memories! 💕 💯
1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Young males are by far the most dangerous , they believe far too much in their own skills , they drive aggressively and far too fast , take more risks , drink more , and probably much much more. Females , don't have the skills , but they also do not kid themselves with regard risk , so hence , all in all , they are much safer , there is no doubt about this and hence young guys should have much higher insurance.
Not that I had many , but all my mistakes were made as a young aggressive male driver , and all that did happen ( in vehicles with no ABS bakes , airbags , steering etc ) , but any of those incidents that occurred could / should have easily been avoided.
As an older males in a vastly better vehicle , with zero aggression , things are vastly different.
00 ReplyNeither.
Whoever dedicates more time and has more respect for it will be the better driver. As with any task of life. Just like not all men make good lovers, but those who spend more quality time and have respect for their woman make for the better partners, men, and individuals. 👍
It’s worth mentioning men GET into crashes. They don’t avoid them. I don’t know who has a clean driving record. As well as not all men ARE race car drivers. Otherwise they would be. Even RACE CAR drivers (I love F-1 racing by the way) get into crashes. Bikers get into crashes. Kids on scooters get into crashes.
There is no best one. It depends on various factors, but I’d say aside from the biases people love to water and feed….
it depends on how much time an individual dedicates to that thing- in this case, driving, and how much respect they have for it. Reckless drivers CLEARLY have no respect.
00 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. On average, sure.
" If this is the case, then why are men (especially young men's) insurance rates higher"
FYI, it was discovered that insurance companies charge single women more than married women and charge widows and divorced women MORE than anybody. Apparently being with a man has a calming affect on women's driving.
Big difference between a young male driver and an older one too. I drove way too fast when I was a teenager. I still drive fast sometimes but I've caused zero accidents over decades of driving.
Maybe it matters where you live too. Every region seems to have different norms of how people drive.

Anonymous(36-45)1 yI worked at oil changing shops changing oil for over nearly 6 years, seeing around 50-100 customers daily and guiding them into the shop as they drove. I noticed enough tomes that it takes some women a few split seconds more to begin braking, sometimes half a second or more. This is probably because men have a high metabolism, which affects with many things for both sexes like the perception of time and lifespan. The downside of men having higher metabolism is we live shorter lives. It’s also the reason women “get cold.” Very interesting, huh?

Opinion Owner1 yAlso I get the feeling men want to impress other men with their driving.

1 yMen's insurance rates are higher because, traditionally, men drove much more than women, and simple probability meant they were more at risk. Men also drove more expensive cars than women that were more costly to repair when they were damaged in an accident. Higher risk and higher repair costs equal higher insurance rates.
In today's world, research shows that women drivers use their phones more often than men, resulting in a higher percentage of distracted driving, which increases the chance of an accident. This, and laws preventing discrimination based on sex, has led many insurance companies to disregard male vs female driver and base rates on driving history and the value of the vehicle being insured. My wife's and my rates are similar, mine being a bit lower since my car is a few years older than hers, as well as being a less expensive model.

1 yMy instinct tells me they're equal but the actuaries say not so fast!!
Statistically, men are involved in more fatal accidents and receive more traffic violations than women, which suggests that women may be safer drivers.
However, men tend to pass driving tests at a higher rate, but they also engage in riskier behaviors like speeding and driving under the influence.
Women generally have fewer insurance claims and are less likely to be involved in serious accidents.
Overall, while men may have certain better skills like spatial awareness, women tend to drive more safely and cautiously.00 Reply
1 yUnless I'm mistaken, the data shows that men have a lower incidence of accident than women, and there are more "safe" male drivers than female drivers. However, the accidents involving male drivers are, on average, more severe than those involving female drivers. This may be partly explained by a segmentation in the population: a small group of male drivers are excessively risky or aggressive. It can also be explained by the male tendency to drive aggressively on occasion, even if they are safer on all other occasions.
10 ReplyBecause I have ADHD I drive quite fast and aggressively for a woman. I’d say that I process things faster therefore I can drive faster without any accidents it seems. I also have fast reaction times because I ride motorcycles. But I don’t think I have a typical female brain, I probably have a more male leaning brain because I’ve also got high functioning autism.

Anonymous(30-35)1 yHaving worked in insurance underwriting, I can tell you that most of these answers are far from the truth. Both sexes are almost equally as likely to get into a wreck and get tickets.
The REAL reason young males have higher rates than young females is due to BIOLOGY. The male brain finishes developing as late as 26 years old while most female brains are done developing around 23-24. We take this into account when making our decisions on rates because we see a less-developed human brain as having a higher potential to lose focus at key moments.
00 ReplyYes men are the best drivers but only in nighttime. At day, women are better than man.

1 yI don’t care. I see women speeding over the limit leading to spin outs at intersections, men getting drunk behind the while of a dangerous steel death machine under the influence that has the capability to kill not only themselves, but innocent people….
It is the individual’s fault and individual’s negligence. If you wouldn’t trust yourself / your judgement to put the lives of others in your hands then you shouldn’t be driving.

Anonymous(25-29)1 yThere was a huge study that showed women caused more accidents. But auto insurance rates are higher for men, because when they do case an accident it's usually worse. If it weren't for men's (especially younger men) penchant for driving fast or recklessly, I think they would be better drivers than women. But it is what it is.
20 ReplyIts a difficult one to answer but I often notice that some woman are scared or insecure while driving. This causes them to make mistakes because they think to long before deciding what to do. In general I believe that men are less likely to drive in a insecure way but that doesn't make them better drivers then woman.
I do know for sure that insecure drivers are the most dangerous drivers on the road00 Reply- 1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
1 yWomen Have a Higher Accident Rate Per Mile Driven
On average, women are more likely than men to be involved in a car accident. Women were involved in 5.7 crashes per million miles driven compared to 5.1 crashes per million miles driven by men. However, men have a higher accident rate and drive about 30% more than women.

Anonymous(25-29)1 yThere are two interesting things re: this topic.
men seem to inherently take bigger risks than women in nearly every conceivable situation, leading men to get in more crashes.
men are typically better than women at spatial recognition, driving examples: parking, changing lanes.
I feel like they both explain the statistics and the stereotype.
20 ReplyWell, Women are more careful and cautious when driving compared to their male counterparts, hence they cause less accident and less road rage compared to the men which led to the way lower rate of mortality.
Regarding driving skills, there is nothing extraordinary that any gender can do better than yhe other, as driving is a simple mechanical tasks and everyone with the very low IQ can learn it. Of course the more one practice the better one gets.00 Reply
1 yI depends on what you Classify as an all rounder good driver. Men are usually impulsive which leads them to speed or make bad manoeuvres. Females are very careful generally but are very hesitant which can cause problems. Men are more observant and from personal experience over many years of driving 95/100 times someone lets you go out of a junction is a male.
00 Reply1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I would young men under 25 are very aggressive on the road but this tapers off after 30 after that the men seem to calm down. Women seem to be more distracted than men, though. When ever I drive by a car that is busted or has had some minor accident on the road I almost always see a women standing outside of the car waiting for police to show up.

1 yyes and no. their theoretical ability to safely drive is better than that of women. but the average male nauture is too aggressive and risk taking to actually use that skill to it's full potential.
the following isn't an educated guess, it's the facts: women are more prone for minor dents and scratches, cause they are just technically worse at driving. but men are more prone for deadly high speed crashes than women are, cause they're aggressive and risk taking.00 Reply Women are more cautious therefore they tend to get into less severe accidents whereas men especially younger men can be very careless therefore getting into more severe accidents - it is true that men have better spatial awareness than women - an example would be even though a man cannot see his bumper he is better able to comprehend where it is in relation to other objects than a woman - in general - would it be fair to say that men technically may be better drivers but women are safer drivers?
00 ReplyMen drive more miles, so are involved in accidents more often. Insurance rates reflect that. And for $30, men in California can become women and get a reduced rate. Or change your sex on record for free at your next license renewal.
10 ReplyIf, by "better" you mean "safer", women are, absolutely, better drivers. If you talking about the abilityt to maneuver a vehicle quickly or technically, than men are better drivers. As a passenger, I feel safer riding with women.

Anonymous(30-35)1 yYoung women are "better" drivers than young men simply because young men take more risks. As men mature they become wiser and less aggressive, at which point they are better drivers than women their age. Men have better coordination, motor skills and spatial perception, which makes them better drivers.
