Are men better drivers than women?

If I were to make any generalizations, it would be that men are more aggressive and women more defensive.
Insurance rates show that women pay less. Presumably because they get in fewer, less expensive accidents.
On the flip side, I believe that being aggressive tests and challenges your skill and causes you to learn at a higher level, faster. But you are also going to make more mistakes.
To compare it to something else like say rock climbing, we could say the more aggressive climbers get better, faster. But the less aggressive climbers get hurt less. But they also don't climb as high or as difficult routes, or have the same proficiency.
My personal observations are that I do not see many females testing the limits of what their vehicles can do, but I have often seen it from males. I personally know some drivers who can do incredible things with vehicles, and none of them are female. But also those incredible drivers have had a variety of accidents as well.
So, what do you mean by "better"?
Women are safer.
Men are more proficient.
Not to say there are not proficient women or safe men.
I think it depends on the person and what you think constitutes as a "bad" or "good" driver. Men get into more accidents and make riskier decisions while driving. But if you think about having control over the vehicle and making snap decisions that could save your life, I can see men potentially being better at that. It seems like men drive a bit more confidently in that sense, even though that confidence could get them killed when making risky decisions. So in that sense it doesn't matter how much control you have over the vehicle, if you're still going to make the decision that will get you in an accident regardless.
Personally, I prefer my mom's driving over my dad's. She's such a calm driver. My dad is a better driver in a technical sense (really good at parking and his control over the car is impeccable), but he has a tendency to make risky decisions, speed, and bend the rules. It's like he's always in a hurry. Always wanting to pass the car in front of him even if they're going at the right speed, and even if it means getting a little bit too close to the cars coming towards us in the lane we're passing in. His driving just makes me uncomfortable, I don't care if it means we arrive at the destination 10 minutes faster. I'd rather be calm for 10 more minutes than feel anxious over how fast my dad is going.
Men get into more accidents, but they also drive more. When you account for miles driven, men actually get in slightly fewer accidents than women.
www.trafficsafetystore.com/.../
www.syracuse.com/.../...than_men_less_driving.html
But the accidents men cause tend to be more deadly.
@backdoorman Interesting point, thanks for bringing that up. :) But yeah regardless, it just depends on the person. Both genders have their generalized pros and cons but I think both are also equally capable of being good drivers.
Agreed.
Women are better drivers by far. Even have lower insurance rates since they are less likely to cause a accident.
@Apple1996 Wrong. Men drive FAR more miles than women do. Whenever men and women are together, the man almost always drives. Yes, men do have more accidents, but when you factor in more miles, I am willing to bet men are much better drivers.
@KrakenAttackin I always drive when I'm with my husband. I'm not sure about other realtionships but that can't be that big of a factor. Most people have their own car and drive everyday so I dont believe more men are on the road driving then women.
@KrakenAttackin that is from 2012 so I'm sure the numbers have probably changed since then but yeah I get your point that men drive more miles
Fair enough. The eventual dominance of self-driving cars will probably make this discussion irrelevant.
@KrakenAttackin haha too true
This isn't actually true anymore
Ever since around 2018 young women have been statistically more likely to end up in an accident than men.
Though women's accidents tend to be less severe. Women are so much more likely to end up in their fender benders that young women actually get a higher insurance cost than young men do.
Men hit a tree at 150mph because he wanted some adrenalin, women hit another car at the traffic lights because she was texting.
More men drive, and drive more miles.
Hold you're tongue. As somebody who has worked in transportation for a while I can heavily disagree by experience. I have nearly been in to many accidents because of women because of a couple reasons I isolated their tendencies to. Terrible lack of patience and inability to stay off their phones
Well I'd partly agree on that. Its because I'd say men are better and worse at the same time when it comes to driving. While major accidents happens more and tends to happen on men, it's not as common as minor accidents that doesn't include insurances like scratching/bumping someone's car, not parked properly, overheating in the middle of the road which tends to happen to women.
@Apple1996 Your husband sounds like a Soy Boi.
@Apple1996 Do you really want to go down the path of how abusive women can be toward their children?
@KrakenAttackin my husband has been to a combat zone 3 times so nah. I don't think soy boys are out there killing off ISIS members
Yeah, sure honey.
@KrakenAttackin it's true. He gets deployed almost every year. he's already been this year so waiting for it to happen again here in the next few months
And he married a left wing lunatic.
@KrakenAttackin hey no. Everyone here knows I'm a trump supporter
@Apple1996
"Some men would argue that they are better mothers. Men think they are better at everything."
So do women. What does that tell you about people?
@MCheetah like me personally ill admit when I dont know something or am not good at it. Not sure about other women but I've never met one that argues knowing shit that they dont acutally know or aren't good at but men fight it to the death that they know how to do everything, that they'll figure it out or fix it. That's just what I've noticed but I'm around a lot of men so I don't know about other women
@Apple1996
"I've never met [another woman] that argues knowing what that they don't actually know or aren't good at, but men fight it to the death"
Then you haven't met too many other women, then. Especially feminists. (Arguing sh*t they don't actually have a single clue about, to the death.)
@KrakenAttackin @Apple1996
Ignore this guy, he thinks just because he has a penis what he says goes
Yep i have seen Kraken for quite a while with his weak attempt to gaslight women.
@KrakenAttackin actually women have more accidents and they tend to cost less and get claimed less; but when men have accidents they are generally worse.
Statistically women are worse drivers, but men pay the price. I sell insurance, trust me.
@DeltaCharlieEcho I dont think it's just it's just about accidents. Men get a lot more traffic tickets then women do so that probably plays a factor into them having to pay the price and getting labeled as worse drivers overall from the insurance companies
A lot of the tickets men get are unwarranted and women get out of a lot of tickets they should be getting. I mean I got a ticket once stating that I was going 63 in a 35 when I was going 32. The argument in court was that I was driving fast enough that the camera didn't catch me. As far as I know, the speed of light isn't below 65 mph let alone 35 so either he was incompetent or intoxicated, I don't know. But I do know that I got a $400 and 3 points for something I didn't even do.
Oh and women hit and run at ridiculous rates because they don't even realize they've been in accidents. That is how unaware women are behind the wheel. Shit, my ex hit and ran two city trucks without insurance in one winter.
Teal me again how women are better drivers...
@DeltaCharlieEcho wow that's surprising they got you for going so fast that the camera couldnt even see you lol
Luckily I've never had a ticket and never even been pulled over. I'm a little angel while driving 😇😇
Anecdotes
Men have better reflexes and self control in situations the require quick thinking (to avoid an accident). Women tend to panic and freeze up. I knew one girl who got in an accident because instead of swerving the wheel she screamed and covered her face up.
HOWEVER men can be much more aggressive behind the wheel. They speed more and weave between lanes without using a turn signal. That’s why we get in more dangerous accidents. We take stupid risks
Overall I was a very careful driver. But it was sexist bullshit I had to pay outrageous car insurance premiums when I was 16 to 24 just because I have a dick between my legs.

What the heck does Asexuality have to do with this poll?
The definition of asexuality is:
"The lack of sexual attraction to others, or low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity".
You got to explain in simple words that everyone can understand how an asexual oriented person is a better or worse driver. Sexual orientation has strictly nothing to do with gender. Those are two totally different issues that you cannot integrate in such a question.
Good clarification. I think many people are confused by some of these terms today and get gender, sexuality, sexual preference, and other factors confused (like crossdressing vs. transgender). Thank you for taking the time to point it out. I saw it but was too lazy lol.
mysterious... the only thing I could think of is that this poll is not really about whther men or women are better drivers, but rather if... no wait, that doesn't make any sense, either.
And if someone selects "asexual", are they casting a vote saying that they themselves are asexual, like the "i can't drive" vote, or are they expressing the opinion that asexual people are the best drivers? Or the worst? It's unclear.
I know its kind of a boring answer, but it genuinely depends on the driver.
There are a few general differences between men and women drivers though, I think. What I will say, speaking with myself included, is that women tend to be more nervous drivers or cautious. Perhaps meaning we aren't as smooth or confident on the road (of course maybe the lack of confidence comes from being told we can't drive all the time too...).
Men are more confident, I think, and as a result they tend to drive better technically speaking. However, as a side note, I think with that confidence comes more danger. For example, young new male drivers are notorious for over-confidence and dangerous driving. Also, sorry to say I've seen a lot more stupid road behaviour from men also.
Depends.
Hell I've seen a lady trucker turn her semi in a tight spot with no problem. And one time i was going down a road (speed limit 45) and some dumbass stuck at the side of the road at the bottom of a hill opened the door in front of me and got out, as i was about to pass. I had to quickly squeeze tightly between her and another car on the other side going by. In the dark. Now THAT was some measurement lol
But there are guys that know their shit too. My dad is an example with his van, doing perfect tight u-turns when he's had to and times of avoiding dumb georgia drivers.
Geniuses and dumbasses are both men and women lol. The bad ones were failed to be taught right.
I just started driving and so far I've backed into a curb, almost blew through a stop sign, hit the gas instead of brake while turning, and almost hit a parked car... While I'm shit I don't think gender plays a huge role in it, maybe women tend to be safer drivers tho? Just an observation of others.
lol you will get it eventually as long as you stay focused omg be careful out there lol
@zeitgeist057 said
did not say that... but I did assume you were 17 year old female based on the pink font and listed age.
It has nothing to do with sex. Most of the time, it has to do with amount of driving experience. Majority of women drive less than men. Just think back to your parents: when driving to a destination far away, who did majority of driving? That said, a 40yo female will probably have the same amount of driving as a 30yo male and so will be as good a driver.
My wife of 20 years is as safe on the road as me, having beed driving as much as me over the years. We have different driving styles but I would not consider myself a better driver.
Statistically, men are more prone to drive recklessly, aggressively, speed, less prone to wear seatbelts & are more often to be found intoxicated and/or distracted behind the wheel. That's why insurance rates for men are typically higher than that of women of the same age with some insurance companies charging over 10% more for a teenaged boy than they would for a teenaged girl. Stats don't lie.
.
It all depends on the person, I believe there are good and bad drivers, in each gender but I do believe there are Hotheads who get behind a wheel and do not care what speed they go that is why there are so many people who lose their life's, My cousins best friend was with his girlfriend and they were coming home, this car smashed right into the girlfriend's side of the car, she died instantly, while he was still alive and was transferred to Pittsburgh PA Hospital and lived all day on life support and passed away around 4:00 p. m. yes so sad, some people just don't know how to drive?
it all depends on who drives. I know men who drive like shit too.
the deal is I think women don't have that much of an urge to take too much pride in driving better. usually the better drivers also play racing simulators and learn a lot about cars through them.
since I work on my car, play racing sims and have a good feel for what's going on below the hood I consider myself a good driver and would say a woman with interest for the technical side of things is highly likely to be a decent driver.
P. s. "you lost because you granny shifted, not double clutched like you should"
I think comparing genders with things like driving shouldn’t be done because both genders are both really intelligent and good at certain things. Good male and female drivers are individualized and shouldn’t be compared necessarily. Each person is different. There may be a female that is better than a male at driving depending on those two people you’re comparing. But as an overall statistic, it’s hard to say that one gender s better than the other for this.
Sure, just look at all the AMAZING female Formula 1 drivers!!!
@KrakenAttackin don't forget all the AMAZING wrc and rally drivers. Oh wait...
@DeltaCharlieEcho Yeah and female Le Mans winners... oh, no...
I think it depends - I know a PhD student who makes his wife do all the driving cause he has poor hand eye coordination // I know a hedge fund director who makes his wife drive cause he’s terrible at it // I know a doctor who makes his wife drive cause he’s terrible at it // I know an Ivy League graduate who failed his driving test 10 times because he had poor hand eye coordination - his iq was in the 99.999th percentile
Men are far more likley to drag race, g ett road rage and speed. It's why male insurance isn't more higher. Also, men are way more prone to be necklace in their younger years and drive recklessly as a result.
While women can be bad drivers, we are more likley to drive more offensively and because women are more likely to be driving with children, we drive slower

Meh, i dont think it really matters the gender, I've been in cars with terrible woman drivers and men!!
And great for both as well, its hard to choose, i think it all comes down to experiences and reactions to situations 🤷♀️
However i was always told the saying, "woman drivers no survivors" 😂😂😂😂
Which i thinks a bit funny (not offended female by the way)
Not necessarily. I’m a tiny woman that drives trucks and sports cars. I even wanted to be a stunt driver at one point in my life. I’m the girl most of my guy friends trust to drive their cars. I guess because I do cool stuff and less likely to crash while doing so.
It depends on the person. I've seen horrific drivers of both sexes, as well as great ones.
Driving is really one of those things that is mostly common sense. Of course, everyone makes mistakes no matter who they are, but those that tend to make them constantly and the same ones over and over again tend to be the ones who lack common sense the most, or are completely distracted on their phones (something that really pisses me off!!!).
Women are scientifically better at multitasking and have better control over their temper.
Scientifically multi-tasking is impossible, maybe they are better at switching between two separate tasks.
"insurances"? While major accidents happens more and tends to happen on men, it's not as common as minor accidents that doesn't include insurances like scratching/bumping someone's car, not parked properly, overheating in the middle of the road which tends to happen to women.
@Weston_PhD You are correct. That's kind of what multi-tasking is. However, by multi-tasking it can take away focus from little things at a time. For example, stopping at the correct time. They end up slamming their brakes and suffering bumper damage. @Aiko_E_Lara This is where the minor accidents come in. Generally, men tend to have more of an urge to speed or get through things more quickly, causing unsafe and risky behavior that causes major accidents.
Because of that, I believe women are better drivers because they do less damage, and have less "close calls"
Talking about the frequency, major accidents happens less frequent. What still talked about is is the minor accidents which happens more often and happens to women more. That doesn't necessarily make women better at driving in general.
@Aiko_E_Lara Yes, women have more accidents, but only because her driving doesn't appear risky to other drivers. However, you can see a man driving poorly from a distance, therefore you can take action by assuming he is going to do something stupid to prevent an accident. Both economically and socially, that would make women overall "better drivers"
Also talk about the frequency gap, minor accidents happens way more. But saying women are better, that's only your conclusion. It's just really easy to be one sided about the situation because both are better and worse their own ways.
An example would be like this. Imagine a country that have less crime rates compared to the others but crimes in that other country are usually pick pockets, homicide, kidnapping and theft but no school shooting, building bombing, high jacking and more crimes that can kill groups of people which happens in that country but only not as often. So anyone have their own ways of weighing and deciding which is worse.
@Aiko_E_Lara I can agree with that. It really depends on perception.
I don't care all my parents are good drivers well I never really met a sh*tty driver except the women that almost ran us of while at the green traffic lights while flipping us off for some reason not that she was bad at driving she was just an a**hole haven't met a bad driver I don't drive I'm not old enough to do that
By all parents I meant also my stepmom and my stepdad not only my mom and dad
Men are more likely to drive dangerously, such as speeding and swerving in and out of lanes, but women tend to be more distracted when driving. Eg. Phones, makeup, how they look in the mirror, etc...
It depends on how you view it. If take average men and women and put them on a track the men would most likely win, and thus be better drivers, but if you compare accidents stats women are better drivers.
According to science, yes, men are better drivers.

I've had women bitch their heads off at me acting like I was in their way. Last week for example I had a woman shoot through a red light and I had the right of way with a green light and she yells at me acting like I was in her way when I was trying to make a left turn. And a week before that I had another yell at me when I was trying to get out of my parking spot even though she practically blocked me in with her car and wouldn't move until I had to come so close to her car with mine she was forced to move only for her to bitch and yell at me. I also had another who shot through a stop sign a week before that parking spot incident and yell at me and curse me out even though I was at a full stop at a stop sign.
More men can drive a stick shift than a woman.

I can, can you?
Your not the best. The best can drive everything. From cars to semi truck and everything in between.
Best drivers choose stick shift over a automatic transmission.
It largely depends on the person Buuuuuuuut, in general I think women are more likely to be more careful while driving.
Men are more consistent drivers. Women are more considerate drivers.
You can count on a guy more often to keep speeding if they are speeding, turn across your lane, etc. You can count on a gal to be more considerate, but if this includes giving you the right-of-way when she should not, then this can become a negative thing.
I am sure, that they both do equally well.
The worst drivers are the local public transport bus drivers here. Almost every time when they accelerate, the passengers almost lose their balance. Same when they stop. And the space in the transport is not big.
Generally speaking men are better drivers however I’m a pretty badass spirited driver so there’s an exception to the rule.
depends what you mean by better. Women are more cautious drivers, that much is clear. Men, en masse, do have faster response time in terms of reflexes though.
So really both have their strengths, if I wanted to keep the cargo safe I'd trust the woman but if I wanted something to get somewhere fast I'd go with the man
As an OTR truck driver i can say both sexes are bad at driving but men are worse, they speed and are vastly more prone to road rage (how often do you see a teenage girl or woman with road rage?) both sexes drive distracted with their cell phones in their hands I think men would be better handling an intense defensive maneuver however so if I were seconds from impact i’d rather be a passenger seat with a male driver.
It depends. Women tend to be more easily distracted because of things like applying makeup, but men tend to drive far faster.. If she is going 40 in a 40 zone and putting on makeup and he is driving 70 in that same 40 zone, who is more dangerous? Auto Insurance company stats say he is, thus men have higher insurance premiums till 25.
Seriously? Women apply fucking makeup in their cars?
Nahhh I’m a far better drives than all my guy friends
Your not a man : )
If you don't like the way women drive, stay off the sidewalk! ... lol

It depends on the person, i have seen teens, seniors, women and men that drives very good, can see a wreckles drivers before shit hits the fan and I have seen some real shitty drivers from all ages that can't drive for shit and I have been to about 8 or 9 countries and drove too.
Skill-wise men are better. Safety-wise women are better.
Why are these questions always gender vs gender? Shit like this literally depends on the person. I can say I'm a better driver then my husband because I'm not constantly on my phone while driving like he is. But everyone is different.
Men are way better drives than women. Women cause a vast majority of accidents and collectively file more claims and increase insurance premiums. When men are in accidents usually they're worse but they're in way less accidents than women because men tend to take driving more seriously even if they're having fun.
There isn't a test so I can't really say, but the experiences I had in life, I would say men are by far better.
My uncle and aunty joined a driving school at the same time, he passed after 2 weeks my aunt is still struggling.
I had a friend in college she used to teach me how to drive, used to tell me I should drive cause she felt more confident about my driving.
Then maybe it can all depend on individual but not till then.
It depends on the person and what you mean by “better”. Generally speaking though, my husband is a better driver than I and my dad was a much better driver than my mum. My dad is definitely a much better driver than I!! Lol
I do not think that how good someone is at driving is determined by his or her gender.
Some men are better at driving, some men are not. Some women are better at driving, some women are not.
It depends on the person.
Id say because im a woman and cannot drive for the life of me😂 How i got an approved liscense and drive everyday is beyond me
My Mum's boyfriend is a bad driver. My Mum is a great driver and she even taught herself.
So it depends on the person
While major accidents happens more and tends to happen on men, it's not as common as minor accidents that doesn't include insurances like scratching/bumping someone's car, not parked properly, overheating in the middle of the road which tends to happen to women.
@Aiko_E_Lara My Mum's a great parker, she's careful so wouldn't scratch the car and her cars have never overheated.
And if anyone is bothered cause she taught herself, she had no choice. She got pregnant at 16 and her Mum wouldn't teach her to drive (she's psycho). She was trying to do what was best for my sister.
Your mum is not the average. Thats an anecdote.
@Aiko_E_Lara S How does scratching and bumping a car (assuming you mean with the door) count as bad driving? I think crashing is a much bigger deal than what you mentioned.
Because that is still considered an accident and damage in someone's property even if it is a minor accident but still minor accidents happens way more often if talking about frequencies and women tend to do that. So it always depends on how you evaluate it and doesn't always mean women are better just because they make less major accidents. Yes crashing is worst which happens to men more but frequency wise that happens way less to minor accidents.
Well women can't follow directions very good, not a very good idea of where they have been going to get back and I've seen loads and loads doing things like makeup, hair and such things whilest driving too fast and not even looking. Men are more bullish drivers but can useualy drive better if they wanted to, all as a generalized thing offcourse women can drive well and find where they going but it's so rare I never seen it only on TV and films.
Well men can't follow directions very good, not a very good idea of where they have been going to get back and I've seen loads and loads doing things like testing, staring at womrn and such things whilest driving too fast and not even looking. Women are more bullish drivers but can useualy drive better if they wanted to, all as a generalized thing offcourse men can drive well and find where they going but it's so rare I never seen it only on TV and films.
You see, these two statements are just as ridiculous. We are all the same, stop having the need to be at the top of everything.
No it's false minds are different, body's are definitely different you can see that hopefully and both have different roles though history making men better at things and women better at outher things, generally speaking. I've never even seen a good female driver in my life only on TV and films, never seen a girl who can map read or give and follow directions, men are better at driving most of the time it's just how it is if you don't see it then your ignoring what's going on in day to day life or brought up way different to the norm.
Women can often get lower insurance rates as they are considered more careful drivers on average..
Then again, I've passengered to some pretty bad driving on both parts
Not true anymore. Not since 2018. Women are now statistically more likely to end up in accidents.
Though male accidents, while less frequent tend to be more severe. So insurance cost is roughly equal.
This is thanks to smart phones and the revolution of texting while driving, which women are much more prone to.
That is a sexist view that is debunked, stop thinking this
Referring to the people who voted females or males
The Asexual thing caught me off guard, what's that doing there XD
Anyway gender doesn't matter here, adjust the seat and it's just as convenient for the other. The difference, is in the experience, who's got more experience than the other
I've been driving since I was 17. So judging by my personal experience of seeing both men and woman driving, I'd say men are better drivers.
According to every driver I've heard everyone else on the road can't drive. My mom is atually a really good driver she doesn't go fast but she's never caused an accident in the time I've been alive.
I think the social stigma is worse for women, but women aren’t worse drivers for their gender. It truly depends on the person. It’s crazy how most men in this app still think that men are better drivers. Lmfao.
Yes, of course. Except for Danica Patrick. ;)
Wife won't even drive my new car..."No f'ing way." Maybe it's the 400hp and thousand dollar wheels. LOL
"What if I curb it?"
"Then I would kill you."
"See? That's why I don't drive it."
Win win win all around. :)
Well it's 50/50 for different reasons-- men on average do have faster reaction times, but men often also drive in more stupid ways than women and take more risks in traffic that we shouldn't, leading to more accidents.
Depends on the person.. When men are young, they are worse drivers, when men hit about 30 it flips.. One thing to note, I see more women than men texting and driving, and interacting with their cell phones and driving.
technically, they are because they have better spacial awareness. but they are also too risk taking specially in the ages from 16-28 so more men die in traffic, which pretty much negates their "advantage".
Lol hell no. All the men i know get impatient, angry and drive too fast. With women they are definitely a lot carmer and just don't want to make any mistakes.
I don't think this is a gendered thing. MOST people can't really drive, in my opinion (including me; however I don't own a car).
I don't think gender has anything to do with driving ability.
I've seen equal numbers of what I would consider poor drivers by both men and women.
I believe both genders can suck at driving but i feel women stress a lot more about the little details while men are more like "it'll be fine" (trying not to generalise tho)
Depends on the person because I've seen bad drivers from both.
This is hilarious if this is a joke
And if this isn't a joke it's still hilarious
Hell yeah men are better drivers. And the only problem they have is taking their eyes off the road when they see a hot girl!
Depnds on the person and the amount of driving experience.
my personal experience is women are worse. They drive jerkily instead of smooth, they either drive too fast or too slow, and they want to play on their phones while driving (to check social media and other dumb shit) while driving
And yeah women do pay lower insurances rates because as i said they all drive soo slow and yet still soo jerkily. There's little smooth transition from brake to gas or vice versa. There's little smooth cornering (they really seem to suffer turning at small 1 lane intersections where there are cars already at
Womens insurance rates are lower, so that means, statistically, they are safer drivers.
There is zero evidence of there being a genetic factor related to driving and as such the skill of a person in driving is dependent of their training and experience
You can also add your opinion below!
