If it is availible for free at the polling place, it's fine. But when you float that idea in front of voter ID advocates they want to cry "that defeats the purpose!"

Oh, as for explanation, the idea is to create a monetary hassle. So, if you don't have a qualifying ID because it is too expensive then you can't vote. Statistically, eligible voters who can't afford an ID are more likely to be black. That's the calculation right wing advocates for voter ID used to figure out they should advocate for voter ID - the calculation is NOT based on actual voter fraud..

Who in today’s world 2024 doesn’t have some form of ID. Even if you don’t have a drivers license you can get an ID from the DMV. You need ID for everything today… go get a library card (you’re not without an ID)). Social security… you’re not getting that without an ID. Go get a license for your dog… you are not doing that without an ID.
One of the most important things we do is vote for our politicians who control so many aspects of our lives… no ID required? Really? Do you really think that’s a good Idea?

You do realize currently that would jam up polling places horribly. I’m not sure why if they can bring the proof needed to the polling place to get an ID why can’t they just go and get an ID a week, month or year before at the DMV. Now I agree just an ID should be free if it’s required for voting.
How about at polling places (with DMV assistance) they help people get IDs the whole week before Election Day so not to burden the polling places on Election Day.

Sure. But they could do that next door to the polling places during polling, too, affecting nothing. And if they can do it next door they could do it in the same building, given a large enough building.

Public workers are the worst, it would be hard to get this started but as long as it doesn’t slow the Election Day process I’d be good with that. Let’s be honest…. There probably isn’t that many people who don’t have ID.

It's all about the margins with republicans. They know their policies are unpopular so they play the odds. Anything to make voting a chore in more densely populated areas will only ever help republicans win despite their unpopular policies. This is why you see voting lines stretching for miles in Atlanta but not anywhere in Margorie Taylor-Greene's district.

It used to be that checking ID was an extra step in the process. Only taking 7 seconds or so on average but when you have five thousand people standing in line that 7 seconds becomes hours of needless delay. One of the main reasons democrats seem to have abruptly switched to favor voter ID is now the process can be expedited to only show ID - so instead of adding 7 seconds it reduces the time it takes to verify each voter by 10 seconds.

So, I do wonder where your question is coming from as the squabble over voter ID was ended like 6 years ago.

You obviously have information I don’t have. Voter ID is even more important today than in the past… there are now 10-18 million undocumented people in our country who by our own constitution should not vote. What stops them from voting? The only way we would know is lack of ID (even though several states are giving drivers license to the undocumented).
You keep talking about Republican this and Republican that… I am Republican (was a democrat changed sides a couple of years back). All I want is free and fair elections. I don’t want ballot boxes being stuffed with ballots for who knows where. I don’t want ballot harvesting as an example someone from a nursing home collecting all the residents ballots, filling them the way they want and dropping them in a box. Family members only should do that. Free and fair…. That’s all I ask.

You have to register to vote. Proof of citizenship is a part of that process but usually the government keeps track of it for you through things like your social security number. Republicans who just want to win without adjusting their policies are of the mind of making that process as much of a hassle as possible. Its a passive sort of "poll test," which conservatives have been wanting so bad we had to write a constitutional ammendmen against it.

Even the heritage action far right think tank only found 12 cases in the passed 40 years. They can't even lie about it because then they have to prove it in court and someone has to go to prison for it. The borders of their insanity land end where others are expected to play along, which is what is driving them insane. The want the power to tell others what the truth is and force people to act like they believe it. All of this is a solution in search of a problem because the rich who own 100% of the media you consume want republicans to win despite the fact that christian nationalism and giving more money to the rich is not popular policy.
